Has anyone ever encountered a car that actually tried to hit them while running?

I had a guy wave me into an intersection, then he gunned it. I think he was just screwing around but it was close. I kicked the plastic around the headlight after getting out of the way and the turn lamp cover shattered, orange bits of plastic everywhere. He tried to get out of the car but was 300+ lbs and his gut was stuck under the steering wheel. I ran off laughing. This was many years ago. I'm more mellow now and would probably just shrug it off.

That has happened to me a few times but fortunately is rare.

The worst example was during a 20k race in Los Osos many years ago.

I was running down the right side of the street with traffic, as a green pick up truck was speeding around an opposite curve about 200 meters away and with plenty of time to see me. As the male driver saw me, he swerved across and aimed his truck directly towards me, driving in the wrong lane of the road. I had to jump into the ditch before he got to me, in order to avoid getting killed.

I got a good look at the driver and have my suspicions of who it was; if so, the driver is now dead.

I was running in a residential neighborhood when an SUV made a left turn right in front of me. I could have stopped running, but kept going and gave them the a "you cannot be serious" look and arm waive. The lady in the SUV (Navigator) stomped on the brakes (she was going about 5 mph). I ran around the SUV and then her husband rolls down the window and starts yelling at me. He actually tells me (yelling) that I endangered him and his children by not stopping for his SUV and told me to get out of his neighborhood. I explain that pedestrians have the right of way and he needs to watch for me, not the reverse. He then calls me an a-hole. I then cut loose on him, using the f-bomb liberally. His precious little cargo will now have to get a lesson on bad words.

But it is amazing that people think that runners, walkers, cyclists must all get out of the way of cars under any circumstances.

Many years ago a car swerved at me but I was wearing a class ring on my right hand and punched the crap out of his back passenger window and cracked it pretty badly. They stopped, paused, and then started to back up so I stopped as well, turned around, and started walking towards the car. That took them by surprise I guess and they took off. Self defense. I was pushing off to save myself. Screw 'em.

Given that these days you can pay $20 in some states for a license plate look up and get the person's name and address, you would think people would be smart enough not to pull crap like this anymore.

Yes. Several years ago I was running along an otherwise deserted road in the winter. There was no shoulder to run on as there was a snowbank plowed along the roadside which had largely frozen over.

A car with three guys who looked like high school kids was coming toward me. I happened to look at the windshield and saw the driver point at me, then the car changed directions slightly and headed right toward me. I didn't change direction at all until the car was maybe 10 yards from me, then I hopped up over the snowbank (it was only about a foot high) at a 90 degree angle. The car turned sharply and came after me. But when it hit the snowbank it spun on an icy patch and bounced across the road getting stuck in the snowbank on the other side of the road.

at the tahoe relays this year i was on the first leg going through an intersection, this woman stops in the intersection cause she sees me, i proceed and she guns it at the last second right infront of me causing me to completly stop, i punched the back of her truck pretty damn hard. i dont know if she did it on purpose or not, maybe its just cause women cant drive.

In 1993, I was out running on a dirt road with another guy, and a county sheriff, approaching from the opposite direction at 30-35mph, ran the two of us off the road and into a ditch. We both looked at each other like, "Did that just happen?", and then crawled up out of the ditch and flipped the cop off and yelled at him. Still can't believe it. And this wasn't a little podunk, Mayberry kind of town. It happened a mile or two outside of a city of 55,000.

I've also had a half-full beer can thrown at me from a vehicle moving at 50+mph and swerving toward me. I don't think they were trying to hit me as much as trying to improve their accuracy. F***ers.

For some reason, my training partner and I seem to get into altercations like this on a daily basis.

Another friend of mine told me that earlier this week someone shot bottle rockets from a vehicle at him.

Its like people see runners and feel obliged to f*** with us.

a car pulling into a CHURCH this week

Years ago I had a couple of local hoods force me off of the road into the ditch, then up ahead of me they pull off and got out of the car. I figured that if I could get passed them, I would be able to outrun them. As I got to where they were parked, one of the **#@** pulled out a pistol, aimed it at me and fired. He had put in a blank shell but it sure did the job of scaring me. Go the plate number and called the sheriff but he told me to laugh it off. Have been tempted to "get even" but am afraid it would become a circle of problems.

buddy of mine was running across an intersection, and an on-coming car sped up. The car came close and my buddy flipped him off. The car followed, and waited. At another intersection the driver sped up, and turned in front of my buddy. In an instant, my buddy walked over to the driver door and slugged the guy while he was still pushing his door open. Cops came, and heard both sides. The driver was taken away in handcuffs for attempting to harm someone with his car.

Living in Boston, I come across jerk drivers all the time. I often deal with people cutting me off as I cross a crosswalk - I usually punch the back of the car.

One time I flipped off a hillbilly tow-trucker that was flying down a winding residential road, he put it in reverse and tried to hit me. I had to jump up on a snowbank to avoid being hit. Lucky for him, other cars saw what was happening.. I would have had a nice iceball for his rear windshield.

i was doing a Virtual Run (The Perfect Run for the Virtual Treadmill Workout) somewhere in Norway, i think it was, and this late model Audi was going way too fast and comes right across the parking strip at me.

I wasn't hurt but it totaled the Nordic Track!

Luckily it was covered by my insurance, after the deductible.
