What makes Rupp even more amazing is that despite the terrible attitude the Oregon distance guys had, he persevered. Incredible. Rupp will break the AR this season, I can't doubt it. I think he will likely be towed under 27 somewhere in this process. Don't ever count him out.

I called Texas A&M last night.
I get these streaks, they only last a day or two, and everything I pick or choose is right for that period. Trust me, this aint the first time.
I really think Rupp will break 27. He handled 27:30 guys and 13:20 guys with apparent EASE, separated by only 45 hours.
He's got a very low 13, dare I say, sub 13 in him. But his real talent is the 10k. Sub 27 if he can get the right conditions and get into the right field.
I can't expect anything less than the AR this season from him. Its almost as if these races are training for him, that's what it looked like.
Rupp handled one 27:30 guy with ease. Forrest is a 27:58 guy. Not to mention Chelanga was clearly off his game (and still terrible at pacing). I don't think he would've beaten Rupp, but he was the only truly quality opponent that Rupp beat. Other than that, he beat a bunch of 13:30 5K guys, a time only 7 seconds faster than Rupp's high school time. Tell me why he shouldn't be manhandling all these people (minus Chelanga)?
Forrest ran 27:52, and looking at him last night, will probably run 27:3x this season. He also ran like no one has seen him run before, probably for his mom.
Rupp beat them both, fresh, after a 5k semi.
He then proceeded to do the same 24 hours later in the 5k which had even more talent, how many sub 13:30 guys in that race you think? They may not have run it yet, but thats about where they are.
Rupp kicked their asses too.
You gotta admit he's good. To do that. That is why I'm taking the bias out of this equation and giving him a sub 27, and the AR. He could do even better.

We are all really setting Rupp up to fail by pasting that sub-27 goal on the wall. If he gets the US record in the 10k and between 6th and 10th in Berlin it will be seen as a failure.
If this is the year that he joins the ranks of 'white dudes who run with the best Africans' then that's fantastic. But remember the next Olympics are 3 years away. 3 years! And look how far Rupp has come since 2006. If he finishes
2009 as a 27:10 guy with a solid finish at world's that's a great setup to eventually be a medalist in London.
There is a huge divide between elite athletes and those who criticize them: the athletes (the ones who do well anyway) beleive in listening to their coaches and improving step-by-step, whereas the critics view anything short of huge breakthroughs as disappointing. Consequently the two sides are not on the same page.

Rupp has given this year to his school team.
I do think that, with good management, he can make the team for Worlds; he's at a level now where he can "back off" (move to a base mode) and still beat enough Americans at Nationals to make the squad. He can begin prepping for Berlin now with some confidence, I believe.
But there is a difference between running against college men and against pros, and I would not be surprised if he were beaten in the selection meet. He should still make the squad, no worries, and could do well at Worlds and other late-summer meets (particularly with not having to worry about a fall cross season coming after them).
Nevertheless, I think that he's already seen his highest fitness of the year: a gift to UO. He'll likely run *faster*, just because the coming meets will make that easier to do, but I suspect that we've seen his peak fitness for the year. (I'd love to be wrong about that, and am not making a prediction here.)
If that turns out to be the case, I hope people will give him credit for having done all that he could to help his team succeed--rather than ding him for having "missed his peak" at Worlds, etc. He (and, presumably, AS) made a decision to win for the Ducks, rather than for the bucks, and I hope will get credit for it.
I respect this decision and hope the rest of the year goes well (i.e. injury-free). After this college season I am much more of a Rupp fan than I was before, though I've never been a Rupp-hater. (Those folks have always perplexed me, though maybe I just lack the empathy to have as much envy as they apparently do.) He's a good young American runner who's improved a lot this year and who, I hope, will continue to do so.
A year from now would be better for an AR run (non-championship year).
He's already run 3 10Ks, will run at USATF and World Champs. A fast 5K attempt may be more realistic.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him break the AR this season, but I do agree that whatever he runs (time-wise, 10k), he will improve on it next year, and possibly by a lot. I do see him running a real fast 5 over in Europe this year, though. Maybe 13:05 or so.

I think you're definitely on to something, perhaps spot on. Remember that Rupp did start outdoors late and was likely only really starting to round into shape around Pac-10's. He'll do nothing going into USA's and be able to take a light week after it before ramping up to worlds. He could likely go under 13:05 and 27:10 right now in Europe but obviously won't do a 10K there and it'll be interesting to see where he does in a 5K since it'll be off of a weird cycle.
Unfortunately the fans will have to wait till next year to see what he's really ready for in everything from 1500-10K.
