Rupp Considering 1500-5k-10k triple at NCAA's

I'd love to do anything in front of the amazing Oregon home crowd.

whoa, lets be honest here... lots of college kids feel team spirit, and want their team/teammates to do well. But honestly, most people are worried about themselves. Very few runners would want to double or triple at nationals just to score team points if they thought it would hurt their chances at a national title. Granted, due to Rupp's talent, he already has already won titles, and will probably still win the 5k and 10k despite the triple. Still, its simply not true that all, or even most, college kids are all about the team.

well, while he's been racing the past 4 months in the NCAA, his main african competitors haven't raced and are still fresh.

all the main competition he will face in Berlin is well rested and the runners are busy preparing for that event.

meanwhile, rupp is busy winning meaningless NCAA titles and running rounds of heats, wasting his energy.

In case you have a selective reading problem (meaning you read only what LetsRun trolls write), Galen Rupp has always been about the "team" at Oregon. He came to Oregon because he had always dreamed of wearing the duck singlet. When NCAA's end, he could turn pro the next day....but, I'd be willing to bet that he will come back to Hayward Field and race in the USATF championships in a duck singlet. Why, because he is about the "team" as much as he is concerned about his personal ability to run professionally in the near future. You, sir, don't have a clue.

Anyone know the NCAA schedule or where I can find that information. I'm very curious as to the time he would have between the 10000m final, if the 5000m would have a heat or just a final, and where the 1500m fall.

Here is the scoop: In looking at the schedule for the championship meet, I noticed that the prelims for the 1500 m are on 6/11 at 8:10 pm and the 10,000 m final is at 9:45 pm the same day. It would seem unreasonable for Galan to run the 1500 m with only an 1.5 hr rest to the 10,000 m (especially considering the climate in Arkansas in June and the fact that he would have run a 5000 m on the evening before).

The 5K and !0K double is tough enough. If he runs a 1500 m heat also he may be losing more points due to exhaustion than he's gaining.

Whoever put this schedule together is no friend to the team that is dominated by distance runners. If Oregon finds a way to win this thing, it truely will be a great accomplishment.

So you're saying the schedulers should have tried harder to accommodate people planning the 15/5/10 triple or the 1500/10000 double? How often does anyone try either of these things?

What I am saying is that it is to Arkansas' advantage to throw roadblocks in to Oregon's way, since they are the dominant distance program. What I am also saying is that when Eugene hosts next year, you can expect a more distance runner friendly program that "favors" Oregon. To some extent, the home team gets to make the rules.

According to that article I think he does the triple. He wants to win that team title and get the Triple in a bad way!

Triple? With the 1500 and 800 meter favorite (and a big scorer in the 5k), do they really need the 4-5 points that Rupp could provide in the 1500?

have you never seen a meet decided by a few points? when it is all said and done, they may not need those 4 or 5 points. but right now, looking at everything on paper, i bet they want those 4 or 5 points. think of them as insurance points.

Actually, with McNamara now healthy and getting faster every day, I think they can get 3 or 4 points from him.

winning the 5k and 10k is a joke for rupp. he's hands-down the best in both and will wait for the last lap in each race and then drop a 53-54 closer to win.

1500 is a little tougher. he probably finished 2nd at best. if he ran only the 1500 you have to believe he'd be the favorite given the way he's been racing in '09. but i'd say 2nd or 3rd is more likely if he triples.

still not bad to score 26-28 points at ncaas

first off, sam chelenga (the ncaa 10000m record holder) would like to talk to you about that whole 5k/10k wins being easy rupp

second, even 4 or 5 points for rupp in the 1500 seems a best case scenario - consider the possibility that rupp comes 9th or 10th in 1500 - getting oregon no points, then possibly losing more points by being tired for chelenga in the 10k

You obviously haven't been watching the same runner this year. It doesn't how matter how tired he is, he will compete harder and kick faster than almost any competitor albeit much fresher. He is stronger than anyone in the 1500m, he can run the last 400m as fast or faster than anyone. He has done great 1500ms off more races than his competition. Even in the worst case scenario - Both the 5000m and 10000m being run all out by list leaders (27:30 pace and 13:20 pace) he will still finish no worse than 4th and probably 3rd or 2nd. He is tough as nails and head and shoulders above anyone else in the NCAA.

German Fernandez can beat Rupp in any 1500/Mile race!!!!!!!
