Legendary marathon coach Bill Squires had a mild stroke about a month ago but is doing better now. He is living with his son now and hopes to return to living on his own within the next 2 weeks.
He is taking phone calls.
Here's to a speedy recovery.

agree strongly. wishing you the best coach.
I remember during the early and late part of the 70's reading about Bill Squuires and his work with the famous Boston Track Club (among these, there was that runner called Bill Rodgers) his ideas and concepts were in a sense revolutionary and he had a geat deal of success with the people he worked with. Billy was a high caliber coach who knew how to work and train people well; not unlike today where you have a lot called "coaches" who do not know or understand what distance coaching is about. greetings to you Bill, hope you will get better soon and maybe you can coach Ritz and we will see results in 6 months from now

Coach Squires is not only a great coach but a awesome person who would give you the shirt off his back to help you out! I know this as fact, I would have never become the runner I was without Coach Squires! Hope your feeling better Coach, your the best!

Coach Squires is a wonderful person and has been a tremeandous help to me in running and in life in general. Can someone email me his son's address so I can send a card?
Jon
Here is his number at his son's house...(781) 944-9406
His home number (in 10 days from now! May 27th) is (781) 665-0056.
Don't worry folks. Friends and fans alike can call Coach Squires. Coach just loves people in general. Do so at your own risk -- he will talk your ear off!
Coach Squires once said to me about racing...
"Go out hard, kick in the middle, and hope in the end."
Probably one of the best quotes I've ever heard, it's pretty solid. Great guy.
Youi are right on Dick;Coach was as unslefish as anyone could be
He lived to coach;loved Track, and helped lift so many of us up.
Coach Squires had something unique about him;it was the pure passion he had for guiding his athletes.
He could be funnny and tough at the same time.
Thank you Billy Squires!

Billy. It makes me wonder -- how come all of the scumbags get rewarded, while all of the true good people in the sport get stepped on?
Newton 'hope' cemetery... Great chat that day.
This is a Coach Squires update for all you nerdlings, seedlings, guppies, and wackarones out there (and you know who you are). He is doing very well - only lingering effect from the minor stroke is a slight short-term memory loss, but that is improving daily. Anticipates being able to return home and live independently in 7-10 days. Loves to hear from people - good for his spirits as well as his memory.

Hey COACH!
You're the BEST!
Great chatting with you last week. Looking forward to having you back on the roads.
Luvya... :)
Bill is the absolute greatest coach and an even greater person.....I worked with Bill for a few months as my coach while living in Boston and he truely has a heart of gold....We are all pulling for his recovery to be a speedy one. Eventhough I am on the other side of the country I am still doing Squires training---Just starting my first week of Alpha phase training this week (read Speed With Endurance)---Squires is such a wealth of knowledge and experience and his book Speed With Endurance outlines the type of training that distance runners need to put in order to be great. Bill, your in our thoughts and prayers.
Coach, Get well soon, we are all pulling for you.
So you know Flash too...! ;o)
Just spoke to Coach. He's doing well and, as before, hard to hang up! Sounded like a very mild stroke--he was not even unconscious when found. But actually lucky that he was found--he could have starved to death (thanks to the next-door lady)! His first word was; "I'm just taking a vacation with a fake stroke; so don't you spread the word in Downtown Tokyo!"
By the way, he said the next door neighbor lady is taking care of Flash so no worries! ;o
Oh no! I love Coach Squires. I trained with him as part of Team John Hancock for the Boston Marathon this year. I ran on Comm ave with him one weekend. It was so much fun! Everyone knows him, and says, "Hi". I talked to him about trouble I was having with my knees and downhill running. He gave me the most zen advice possible. "You can't beat that hill. But, you don't have to let it beat you either."
Here's hoping for a very speedy recovery, Coach.
