Alan Webb: In 2007, Webb looked like he was finally going to cash in on the enormous promise he’s shown since his high school days, setting PRs in the 800m and 1500m and setting the American record in the mile. But anyone who has watched him since has to be questioning if greatness is still in the cards. After a disappointing 2008 season, in which he finishes fifth in the 1500m at the Olympic Trials, Webb was never in contention in the 1500m last night, finishing 10th in 3:42.58, some eight seconds off the pace. Webb’s agent, Ray Flynn, told USA Today that Webb, "had been feeling flat all week” and his coach Scott Raczko, “expects him to be right at Nationals." For Webb’s sake, hopefully that is the case because the bottom line is running 3:40s in the 1500m doesn’t cut it. It won’t rank him among the Top 10 runners in America, let alone the world. While you’d like to give Webb the benefit of the doubt, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to chalk up these sub-par runs as isolated issues when they come on the heels of others, giving the appearance of troubling cycle. You can’t help but wonder if Webb needs a change of scenery/coach or maybe should entertain moving up in distance to the 5000m."
