So he needs to have gone to HS in the US to be a true american?
Then I guess Solomon Haile will be a true American since he won Footlockers @ 22 yo.
good point. although people dont like s Haile for other reasons - i.e. the being 22 yrs old part.
anyway, all you a-holes bashing Meb in this discussion: Meb is a Us citizen, went to high school in the US, ran in footlocker xc champs, ran in college in the US. And yet people STILL give him the same grief of Lagat, Abdi, Kannouchi, etc. It's all really stupid. They're AMERICANS! They represent The United States of America in international competition. They want to win medals for The United States of America. They want to win medals for this country that you claim is only yours. If you cannot respect that, then I can't help you.
Ran this data in October 2008, so pretty sure it's still valid. These are the facts:
Top 8 performances range from 12:37.4 to 12:45.1. These 8 performances are owned by only 3 men. They are legends known as Geb, Bekele, and Komen. Komen's and Geb's were run from 1995 to 1998. Bekele's were 2004-2005.
The next 12 performances (#9 - #20)range from 12:46.5 to 12:49.9. These 12 performances are owned by 10 men, including the previously mentioned studs (5 times). The others are Kipchoge, Sihine, Songok, Cherono, Lahlafi, Mourhit, and Tergat, all with one each.
So to summarize, only 20 performances ever under 12:50. Only 10 men ever under 12:50. Only 3 men under 12:50 more than ONCE.
Also, a sub 12:55 has happened 78 times. Bekele, Geb, and Komen were responsible for 27 (about 1/3rd) of those.
By the way, just for fun: Who owns the most performances under 13:30?
The answer may surprise you.
Bekele's 12:37 is sick ! 12.5 laps at just about 60.5sec per lap. Relate that to the difficulty of running just one 4 min mile, then think about running 3 consecutive at very close to that pace. Scary ability !!
Pretty sure he could complete the 30/40 !
2006 is the year of autologous blood doping.
do you mean homologous blood doping?
MJ,
And Lahlafi and Mourhit were 2 of the most dirty athletes I have ever seen in track and field. Assuming the others are clean (which I would be surprised if they were not), there are only 8 men legally under 12:50...
lol boulimi?

Think you're overestimating Chelanga's potential at this time. No way he runs under 13:08 on Sunday.

Well put, dude...

...FACT 2 - The only thing that Lagat's citizenship proves is that he is AMERICAN. . . .
FACT 3 - Hes not a top kenyan? . . . just because he didnt do well in 08 doesnt mean hes no longer a top kenyan. because he is.
Lagat would be American if his parents mated in the USA>

Just as a side note, doesn't this make the 2 mile WR seem a bit weak. I mean if Bekele can run about 4:02 per mile for 5k I would think the 2 mile record would be in the sub 7:55 range. It also weakens the 3k record from those who say it is "untouchable", just proves that it is only because it is rarely run. Not saying it's slow, because Komen is the third fastest over 5000m ever, but I think Bekele and Geb could have gone under, Bekele may still be able to.

Good points, but depends how you look at it. Komen's 7:20 is two back to back 3:40's, which is pretty steep. However, I am a bit surprised El G never broke it, based on his 3:26 fitness.
