Hippos cant even swim ffs.
Hippos cant even swim ffs.
Heh. I was thinking the same thing. Someone confused his kilograms with kilometers.
I still think it's the river otter FTW.
best thread in weeks! thanks for everyone's creativity.
but the answer is...cottonmouth snake. swims fast and slithers fast.

You and avocado got me, dumb mistake on my part, but... you ain't calc'ing right either if you are still picking the river otter.
The hippo would be FIVE mph in the water, only a little slower than the otter, but 25-30 mph on land, much faster than your otter. hippo over otter easily, right?
that be Usain Bolt mon, but he do it in 150 meters too!

Wrong. It's important to remember that, for any of the contenders, the time in the water will be substantially greater than the time on land. Although I did the calculation very quickly, I believe that an animal that swims 6.0 mph and runs 30.0 mph for the whole distance will end up in a dead heat with an animal that swims 7.5 mph and runs only 15.0 mph for the whole distance. The polar bear versus the otter could be the race of the century!
It would be a good race but moose over them both.
O.K., I know we've been ignoring your moose, but I want to see some hard stats on its swimming ability.
And I repeat myself. A moose would win by so much that he could shut it down with 20m left in the run, lift up his front legs and clap his hooves together.

Check out his wake. And keep in mind, this was only part of a training swim. 5x150m with 1:30 recovery.
Win or lose the bear eats the otter.
The wake is, admittedly, pretty impressive.
Check this out, particularly the 2nd half:

We had this thread before. The Flash wins.

yeah but check the last 60 seconds of this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEXYw91lQuY&feature=relatedboat has to kick into high gear to outspeed the hippo. And the beast can top out around 25-30 mph on land.
Hippo's only weakness is whether or not it can really run 100m at a decent speed. 50m no problem, but that's a lot of mass on some tiny ankles over a full 100m.
A F***ING CHEETA could like run the 100m and jump 50m in the water and then glide the NEXT 50m., EASY
a flying fish could cover 100m on land with the right takeoff. otherwise i'd vote moose.
But... your quick calculations aren't considering acceleration. An animal that can run 30 mph cannot necessarily reach that speed in enough time to overtake the animal who runs 15-20 mph and accelerates fast. I would suspect this would preclude bears, hippos and moose from winning this sort of race. But I am not sure how fast they actually accelerate.
We need hard data on acceleration both in the water and on land.
Cheetah is my vote. I like the river otter's odds too.

You cheated. The swim comes before the run.
Good choice of nic for yourself/selves. You must have a split personality to use the plural form.
Your answer is right here:

The 100m swim would be covered at around 20-30mph and the 100m over land would take all but 8-10 seconds. No other creature could compete with this.
