I don't think there is any chance he will run under 27:40. The man with a better chance is Makau (but he won't get close to a WR either).
Even with 100,000$ if he does?
They could call it a million dollars and it wouldn't make his odds any better. Ottawa is not a particularly fast course (in fact they have been bringing guys in to try to run sub 28 for years) and Merga is not an out and out 10k runner. His 10k TRACK best is 27:02 and he has probably taken some of that speed out of his legs training for the marathon. Keep in mind Makau also beat him by a good 20+ seconds in a half marathon a month or two back. I could be biased though - the manager for Merga has had a number of men and women test +'ve. You have to give any individual athlete the benefit of the doubt (i.e. Merga), but anytime one of Hussein Makke's athletes does NOT win it is a good thing.
mayeroff will surprise the world and win in sub 27, posting a 1:37 PR
Any updates? News?
It starts at 6:30 and I don't think he was in 6 minute shape.
Any updates?
Its almost an hour later and I still can't find the results...anyone? I could have gone and watched it in person...
You thought there was going to be a WR in 26:59, but you chose not to go and watch?
Yeah I wasn't so sure and preferred to eat my pre-race dinner on time instead anyways.
If there was a new WR I think we would know by now...
I just got back from race, where I was at about the 6K point. Merga was about 30 secs up on the next three and just moving. Unfortunately I have no splits/times and still have not heard of results - my take is he will be close to WR !
Merga won in 27:23.9 beating Kibet and CHEBOIYWO by nearly a minute but still failing to set a WR.

Saw Merga run: WOW
Mayeroff too, 32:59
sadly my mayeroff prediction turned out to be a little optimistic. but it was a fun race to watch.
I am not going to make excuses. I performed very poorly.
Thanks to your link, I just found out that I won 125 Canadian Dollars. The performance was so poor, I am going to donate it to the Soi Dog Rescue Project in Bangkok.
I had a good chuckle that my "city" is listed as Sukhumvit Road.
Jason, How did you end up running here?
Jason:so thats what those guys were doing up the street with those burlap sacks yesterday. However, the soi dog made them look like amateurs...
