I find Women's running and racing awesome and exciting. I have seen the women's sport evolve from nowhere to what it is today. When I began to run the farthest women ran in the Olympics was 200 meters. It was not until 1972 that women were allowed to race as far as 1500 meters in the Olympics. Women are now included and run faster on the track and roads than many of the better runners ran in those not so far off days.
And then there is the amazing evolution of the womens marathon. Women were not allowed to participate when I firt ran in the Boston Marathon. Katherine Switzer's run in Boston in 1967 recieved coverage in every paper in the world. I was there to see the commotion, excitement and publicity that casual run caused. According to Tom Derderian's book "Boston Marathon", Katherine ran about 4:20! Paula Radcliff has brought the woman's world record down to an amazing 2:15:25 in less than 40 years. Jim Peters, the world's best in his day, ran (only) 2:17:39.4 in 1954 and the great Sergey Popov's world best which, set in 1958, was 2:15:17. A woman at her best can now compete with these great runners at their best. Yes, Women's running and racing is awesome and exciting!
