It's not just one bad race. She ran like crap at the World's Best 10K in Puerto Rico as well.
This is sort of bs tbh, and I love to promote Barringer and Goucher. It's her first f'ing race of the season. The 3 women who beat her have been racing non-stop for like decades and are always ready to go. If Shalane has 2 more bad races, I will care. I mean seriously... she probably just started doing serious speedwork. You people criticize her for only running time trials outside of World Champs/Olympics, yet here she is deviating from that stereotype and you still complain. Cook prolly started this thread and has made half the posts. If Barringer outperforms Shalane this season, it will be a sign of how far Barringer has come and not a knock on Shalane.

She looked like she was laboring out there. It looked like there were a lot more issues than just having a bad day.
That id the definition of a bad day
3 seconds slower than Jenny B ran, in tougher conditions, while falling off of a much faster pace. She may not be in AR shape, but she still crushes Jenny in an even-split race with a kick.
Besides, I'm sure she had a lot more in her. Haven't you ever gone out in a race, planning to beat someone or run a certain time, but had to face the reality that it's not happening? When you're running alone, on a pace that you're not happy about, it's tough to really dig deep just to run a slightly less mediocre time.

Yeah, and at the world championships two years ago. Oh, wait...
The race rabbit Sherron Rhetta did a good job. The field never came with. She made adjustments with no results. I was in attendance and the tracks condition sucked. Most of the participants I spoke to privately complained. It sounded like they were running on cement.
How did Shalane "bomb"? It was her first race of the outdoor season. Yeah she was laboring but who doesn't labor in there races? And what makes you qualified to decide if this is bombing?
hardly call a few seconds bombing, but when you take how awesome she is, I guess you call it bombing according to your expectations.
I heard she was training through this race and ran a 20 miler with 10x mile pickups at 4:40 pace the day before. Don't believe me? too bad, she's Shalane and she's a badass regardless of how she ran.
Flanagan vs. Rowbury should be the hilight of Prefontaine and an excelent womens 1500m.
Flanagan looks tired and weak.
What's Flanagan's 1500m PR--not too much faster than she ran today, right? I think she'll be fine; this is going to be a bit of a transition year for her (after changing coaches and locations) and maybe she'll just make the team for Berlin and not contend for a medal (which is a pretty ok transition year, I would say), but she'll be tearing it up again in the 10,000m in 2010 and also in some longer road events.
She looked bad and had no fight. I think she is in trouble. Barringer is not that much faster but now is in a different leauge.
