I have worked at this GM dealership for 17 years. It is going to close. I need advice on what to do. I am stunned and bitter but I need to move on. I am wide open to any ideas. I have a degree in Economics and a MBA in marketing. I think I am good at selling. I have a little bit of savings and could even go back to school.
I also live in the midwest and I am open to moving. Unemployement and everything is horrible here.

this may sound like rubbish advice, but i'm very serious about it. assuming that you will be getting unemployment, and assuming that you don't have too many financial or familial obligations, take a month or two OFF. sleep in, run a lot, have fun, do all the things you can't do when you're nose to the grindstone. enjoy life. clear your head. and gently start to ask yourself what you really, really WANT to do with the rest of your life. when this question is asked in the middle of the rat race, we rarely get the true answer, but with a clear, relaxed, unstressed mind, the answer might surprise you. look at this as an opportunity, not a setback. good luck.

Bootsie had good advise actually very good.I worked in the dealership business for 7 yrs.Hated it,move on found a good paying job in the utility gas/elect market with hardly no college.That was 21 yrs ago.Am living well while everybody else is sinking.Look at this as opportunity not a set back.Good luck

I bought a GMC Acadia last year and love it. I wish I could do more.
Maybe the unions will disolve and health and pension costs can be subsidized reducing overhead costs and putting American car companies in good, financially competetive footing.
In any event, I like the cars and wish Americans had more confidence in them.
But, switching careers fom the car business is not a bad thing.
Where do you think the people are going to go to buy a car now? For a while the other dealers sales will go up and reach what they where before the credit freeze but eventually they will increase much more and need MORE SALESPEOPLE!!! This is where you come in. If you like to sell cars and are good at it, the other dealers will soon need people.
Have 14 babies and live off the government.
Put them on strict gluten free Kenyan ugali and Kale diet.
Don't let them ever wear any shoes.
Throw them into the swimming pool at age 1 and see which ones are natural swimmers. Make them swim 20 laps everyday since age 1.
Teach them 5 different languages before they turn 3.
Teach them college algebra before they turn 5.
Become an independent contractor in sales. You can make 6 figures. I work from my home, have time to run and have fun.
There are a ton of jobs on the Internet if you just google "independent contractor sales" or "independent sales rep"
The money is slow to come at first, then it picks up speed.

Thanks everyone for the advice, even the smart a** ones make me smile a little. I am really bummed but trying to look on the bright side. I think I need the month or two off. Let my head clear. Probably I am going to put my house on the market. I just need to start over. As things have eroded at the dealership I have hated going to work most days.
I am pathic right now, posting on LR on a Fri night getting drunk.
Any other ideas? Good places to live? Different career ideas? I thought about getting some type of menial job for awhile so I don't get stale and depressed. Should I go back to school?

To keep it running related I went for an easy 4 mile run to de-stress now my achilles is hurting. Great day for me.
Do you want out of the car business? If not, maybe you could go sell Hondas or Toyotas.
Do a post-bac MS in nursing, then become an NP. Then do consulting.
There's a place where you might find company, it's called Hooverville. It's really where we are all going right now. It might be green and clean.
It doesn't sound so bad. You've got the MBA, the sales experience, the talent, and nothing tying you to your area. There will always be jobs for those who can sell, and salesmen on commission will always have more control over their income than wage-slaves. Assuming you actually like selling, just make it your business over the next little while to sell yourself, nationwide. Try to be positive--you have the opportunity to wipe the slate clean, make a fresh start, and get out of a company that's going down.
One more thing--I'm not sure what your philosophy of work is. And for some of us (teachers, docs, cops), our job IS a major part of our identity. But selling, whether it's cars, computers, or widgets, can just be a means to an end. Your job isn't who you are; it's what you do (and do to the best of your ability) so that you can afford to be who you are. Good luck!
