Absolute BullShitI think in the last couple of years the ethiopians have started to make a little progress in the 3000 Meter steeple chase. They had 3 women and men qualify for the last olympics (a 1st) infact 6 women made the A standard. Jacob Jarso finished 4th and Zemzem Ahmed got 7th place. Both ran NRs of 8:13 and 9:17.ZemZems progression is amazing she dropped from 9:45 to 9:17 in one year. Mekdes Bekele is also @ 9:20In the juniorsKorahubish Itaa is at 9:37.81 (NJ record)Halima Hassen ETH 9:38.44 (PB)In the mens Junior... we have one new guyDereje Abdi 8:32 world Junior champs 4thLegesse Lamiso World Youth Gold and World Junior 5th.So based on the above. Ethiopia will be competing for the medals by the next olympics in the steepleThe 1500 is not as bright.. so far.derese mekonnen won indoor 1500 title and beat komen. But indoor is not as deep and in the olys he struggled. Mekonnen Gebremedhin has also got some good result and is a exciting prospect.Kalkidan Gezahegn is a junior that got silver in the 1500.. she may contend in the future.. she is very similar to meseret defar.Ive talked with some Ethiopian runners.... and they seem to believe that injuries are more common in the 1500 steeple and 800 because of the pounding there body takes. They would rather glide along at 4:55 minute pace .. than push at 4:30It will take time for them to realize that with the talent at the 5 and 10k ... they have to move down or up... most will chose to move up.
Let me also add to this debate.
Kenyans are 'comfortable' losing the 10,000m to Ethiopia because Ehtiopia is without a doubt better with Geb, Bekele and Sihine.
In the same breath, Ethiopia has always ceded the Steeple to Kenya.
If one lost its specialty event to the other, it'd be a great victory.
When Ethiopia wins the 10k, it's no big deal for me. It's Ethiopia after all, the finest. If Ethiopia won the steeple, I'd be sad!
As to why Ethiopia doesn't fare well in the steeple and even the 1,500m, I think it is because they concentrate more on the 10k and the 5k, their two most primed events for both men and women.
In my opinion, if the took up these two events (steeple and 1,500m) religiously, they'd be up there with the Kenyans. They are actually headed there. Jarso, mesfin, Lamisso are world class steeple chase athletes.
Gebremehdin and the other older 1,500m guy (whose name I have forgotten) can challenge anyone. It is only a matter of time.
Native son you are just as annoying as any other kenyan. Why do you have to be nice all the time? Why do you have to be diplomatic all the time ? you think the ethiopians will reciprocate? Sometimes you got to be rough.
Ethiopians suck in 3000SC and kenyans rock! that is it bro ,end off! no arguments ,no excuses.
2 Zemzem Ahmed ETH 9:33.74
3 Sofia Assefa ETH 9:37.96
5 Mekdes Bekele ETH 9:42.73
this is 3000 meter sc for women Qatar Athletic Super Grand Prix 2009
Doha (QAT) - Friday, May 08, 2009
the Ethiopian are coming!!, the ethiopians are coming!!
3000 sc is no more kenyan's game. Ethiopian runners slowly but surly taking over.
Now... the Poland Rock ...who sucks now?
That races did not include the two top russians( one of them being the world record holder). It also did not have kenya's number one ( Eunice Jepkorir ), Neither was Macphrlene ( Australian) or the No.1 romanian included or Dorcas Inzikuru of Uganda.
The women in that race were pretty much 2nd tier in 3000SC.If the top bitcheshad been there i.e the ones i mentioned above, the 1st ethiopian would have been NO 8. So stop burrying your head under the sand and accept it.Ethiopia sucks in steeplechase.

Poland,
I am not being nice. No, no, no.
If you recall, and someone pointed this out here, Jarso won the World youth 2000m Steeplechase record in a 5.30.81 World leading time. The number two guy (Kenyan) was 5.32.88.
NOw, if this isn't scary, I don't know what is. The guy is only 18 and in another 3 to 4 years, he'll be untouchable.
Jarso finished fourth in the \Olympics and even beat Kemboi (who I must admit was not in form) but he did beat him all the same.
THen there is Mesfin, another great guy.
AS for the 1500m, Gebrmehdin beat Daneil Komen at an indoor event. The guy has good speed. I believe that the Ehtiopians have found a starting point in their endeavour to diversify their 5k, 10k specialty. The Marathon could go to anyone, including hte moroccans, Brazilians, Italians e.t.c.
Their ladies are doing well too in the Steeple.
I have been following the ehtiopians in these two events for the last two years or so and what I've come to realise is that if they do it well, they'll start winning medals.
let us not forget that Ethiopian has got only one national stadium and SC needs more effort financially and technically. I do not think Ethiopian will be competitive enough for the coming may be five against kenyan.
Uganda does not have a national stadium for athletics, atleast ethiopia has one.Yet Uganda has produced Dorcas Inzikuru and Benjamin Kiplagat who are amoung the best in 3000SC in the world currently.
Korahubish Bedada Itaa.. ran 9:29 world youth best. Hope Lets run posts this result.
