if we are all invited to give our personal diagnosis, then i'd like to suggest ritz take the cross season off. he shouldn't run again until he realizes why that stress fracture happened in the first place. it's not just the running that caused the stress fracture, it's a combination of his whole lifestyle, including the way he moves outside of running, what he eats, how much sleep he gets, etc. it would have been interesting to see the reaction by the public if wetmore had decided this was a strong omen for ritz and required him to ask the question: what type of lifestyle caused this stress fracture? when he was sure of his answer it would be time to train again.
I from Boulder and know Ritz, I was talking to him last week.
I saw ritz at pre-nats and didn't appear to be running on hsi own there..he was in street clothes. He is either finishing up his aerobics or is already doing very light running. I highly doubt (99.9 % sure) that he won't run this xc season.

Slacker,
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Don't know about the healing time stuff, but as to why it happened, I can tell you that one of the worst things you can do is switch from a softer training surface to a hard racing one without at least some adaptation running in between. I don't know how much pavement pounding Ritz did before his 23:05 road effort, but...
It is possible that he will run at NCs. If he can do a couple of weeks of running to get running-specific coordination back, and keeps in really good shape by hitting cross training like a mad man (which he will), he should be good for AA at least. From today, we have 5 weeks until NCs. Even if he takes the next two off, and then runs some for three weeks to get coordination back, he would definently be a factor. I just hope he doesn't go the path of Adam Goucher...

I really hope Ritz doesn't do this. Get healed and then get in shape.
