I believe 10 x 400 is the Bannister workout. Training methods have come a long way since.
Try 4 x 800 at mile race pace.

Here's one I heard the other day:
5 x 1000 @ mile race pace with 6 minute recovery.
That's not necissarily how I would train but hey, to each his own.
