That's not quite true. Ovett did make the final of the 1989 AAA 1500m final, but performed badly (around 8th), while you're right in saying Coe won despite almost falling over at the bell.
It was the occasion when Ovett admitted he had been paid for the race (the whole fall out with Andy Norman) knowing Coe hadn't.
