When a freshman breaks a collegiate record in his very first race, he would be a fool to measure his progress against other collegians. That's not to say that he's better than than everyone he'll run against in NCAA meets this year. Obviously, he hasn't proven that yet. But if he doesn't have a U.S. Championships medal by next year, it means he's not progressing. All-American honors won't change that.
Then he should go pro if he's good enough to beat All Americans and NCAA's is just too trivial then it's time to leave the college scene, oh wait he's run one ok time, a 3:55 which for peaking is sub par for a pro. The rite of passage tends to be winning the meets that matter in an undeniable fashion... he lost JR WR the race he chose over NCAA Indoor... he didnt race NCAA XC... its kind of funny when it matters he's always injuried or has something else more important...
