honestly, did anyone really think he was going to challenge that record?
i thought haron lagat was a pacer for 5k race.
I would have been amazed if he broke the record, so no surprise there, but I would have expected him and Barrios to be right up there where Chelanga was. Anyone know how the race played out?

If they would have waited till Stanford, they would have gone 27:30.
Wind was a minor factor earlier but died down later.
New NCAA record for Sam Chelanga.
Australian NR for Collis Birmingham.
Possible Japanese NR for Yuki Sato.
6 under the automatic "A" standard.
It looks like another fast track venue was (re)discovered. UC-Berkeley should consider moving this meet up to mid-May.

Bolota paced the through the 5000 in 13:45, although I think he was slated to run 13:35. There was a pack of 6-7 which ran pretty even mid- to high 66s all the way through. Fam lead from 5K till about 4 laps to go, then Chelenga and Birmingham took over as Fam dropped to the pack of runners (Sato, Barrios, Fam, Boaz), and they all conced the race to the two front runners and just hung on for the possible PR and IAAF 'A' standard.
The two-man race with 800 to go between Birmingham was electrifying. Just two strides back of Chelenga with 500 to go, Bimringham made a long, sustained drive to reel in Chelenga. Chelenga fought him off, fough him off, fought him off, but it seemed like Birmingham had his number. He was closing ever so slowly but looked like he was measuring his kick well. Still, Birmingham took 400 of that last 500 to pull almost even with Chelenga who unloaded a furious kick down the final stretch to finally pull away from Birmingham. It was an NCAA record for Chelenga (Rupp's 27:33), and an Australian NR for Birmingham. It was a very courageous run for all of those guys.
Rupp 27:33 10000
Rono = 5000
"Son, do your research. Henry Rono has the NCAA record at 27:22 from his amazing '78 season."
This is going to bite me in the arse in 3...2...1

First off, I never saw a quote where fam said he was going for the AR last night. I think he just wants a fast race or its a waste of time that is why he asks pacers to go out hard. 27:39 is not a bad time considering he has raced in fast races the past 4 weekends, and that the only race he raced last year was the steeplechase (the last 10k he ran was in 06). Definitely not fresh legs for a 10k. He led through the most difficult part of the race and those are some big guys to be pulling around the track. His day will come.
I believe the Japanese National 10,000m record is still 27:35 by Takaoka, so a great attempt by Sato.
Great race by all...

Fam 27:39 not even close went out at 66 which isn\'t good enough. If you talk big produce results.
Says the 34:00 \"10k\"er.
Show me a quote.

It will show sone balls if he is on pace at 8k. It doesn't mean anything to be on pace at 5k and then fade and it means even less to talk about it.
Great Post. They went through 5k in 13:45 so Fam NEVER had any intent on running a US record.
