Man, do I miss that joint. The nights in college and just after that I spent there. I think that was the first place I had fried calamari.
"“We’re going for it. I don’t care. I’m fed up with all this jerking around. The challenge is out there, but we’re going to be on our own anyway, so we decided this morning, that unless something disastrous happens to us, we’re going to get out and run it.”
Lananna was hoping the OTC Elite group in Portland and New Mexico would both enter teams in the event but Alberto Salazar said the Portland contingent won’t be fielding a team.
“We don’t have enough healthy guys,” Salazar said. “It may not look great without a lot of teams in there, but let’s be serious. How many teams or clubs have four guys that can run 4 minutes in the mile? It will be spread out, but I still think it will be a really exciting race.”"
sounds like Lananna and Salazar didn't see eye to eye on this, interesting that Rupp is Salazar's boy, but on the Oregon team. a little dram makes things exciting. to bad so many people ducked the ducks though, wonder if Ok. St. was one of the groups invited.
Ducks 15:58 (Centrowitz 3:58.xx, Biwott 4:02.xx, Rupp 3:57.xx, Wheating 3:58.xx)
Schumachers 16:07 (Solinsky 3:59.xx, Lincoln 4:06.xx, Tegenkamp 4:01.xx, Jager 3:59.xx)
Australians ?
OTC ?
rupp and centro can both run well under 4 at this point. if they run balls to the wall like its a time trial, that would be the best way of ensuring they each run under 4, wheating included. if they just run to compete, the pace could always slow, so i wouldn't trust just being competitive. they each need to just run the best they possibly can.
as for Schumacher's group, we've already seen Jager run 3:58.9 and Solinsky ran a 3:43 about a month ago. i think tegenkamp can riley could be the dead weight on their squad. i'm not sure tegenkamp could run under 4:00 right now all-out. he did run a 13:22, but i don't what that means as far as how well he could run 4 laps. (13:20 = 64 sec. per lap = 4:16 1600m pace) I would like to think he is capable of running under 4:00 right now, but we'll have to wait and see. I would also think that possibly Dan Lincoln would take the place of Riley depending on what kind of shape they're in. I think people forget Lincoln's been training with them for a number of months now, so there's no telling what kind of mile shape he could be in.
If Bethke and Jager were still at Wisconsin, the two of them could team up with Bolas and Miller to give the Ducks a run for their money, and they would. Bethke ran 3:42 a few weekends ago, Bolas and Miller ran 3:37 at Stanford, and Jager has run 3:41.9 and 3:58.9 for this season already.
One way to get some competition would be for the ducks to enter 2 teams. I bet they could both be in under 16.10. With AJ they would have an unbeatable 8xmile. Would any ncaa team in history rival their mile depth this year? I bet there are a lot of countries who could not match them.
lincoln ran fast at payton jordan, i simply forgot about that while posting and remembered afterwords. i think al sal said the portland team (jerry's team) is not running though, correct?
1 Matthew Centrowitz Oregon 3:36.92
2 Peter van der Westhuizen Team Nebrask 3:37.22
3 Lee Emanuel New Mexico 3:37.25
4 Chris Lukezic Reebok 3:37.32
5 Garrett Heath Stanford 3:37.57
6 Jack Bolas Wisconsin 3:37.64
7 Craig Miller Wisconsin 3:37.81
8 Matt Lincoln Phoenix Athletics 3:38.44
9 Juan Luis Barrios Nike 3:39.40

good point, maybe they will. if they put their nest 2-3 guys on the first 2-3 legs that at least gives Oregons A team that extra sense of urgency for the first 2 or 3 men and the last man has to hammer home.
personally I'd put wheating on the first leg since he has the biggest tendency to do just enough to win races and may not run as fast if he gets stuck in no mans land, and then put the 4th man on leg two since he has a decent chance of still being in the thick of things. plus it give the last two a chance to know what they need to do and they are very capable of making up some time. tell centro to run like a rabbit on leg 3 and put rupp's clutch capacity on the anchor.
irun:
jerry's crew is out for training schedule reasons. can't really blame them but it would have been sweet to have them in it.

edit: best
I take it AlSal was talking on Jerry's behalf? Bummer. Would have loved to see Jager and Teg and co. racing the Oregon boys. The article doesn't mention anything about Australia besides their not being entered. Anyone know why they backed out?
it's on tomorrow, this is one of the coolest events for distance fans, especially when you think of 4 collegiate runners on the same team with the ability to consecutively run under 4 minute miles (or at least average it).
4 guys
4 miles
possible 4 sub 4 minute miles in a row
possibly new collegiate record
possibly new american record (depending on lineup)
some possibility of a world record
i'm surprised this hasn't been more hyped up on the main page. this is not something that happens on an annual basis.
The "A" team will have Rupp, Wheating,Centrowitz, and WALL!- a bit of a surprise, but the American and Collegiate record will then be in play.
Oregon will also field a "B" team with Biwott, Withers and "two other guys".
Then the OTC elite (Eugene) will have a team including Gabe Jennings..-Bongos in the east grandstand? :-)
For this event only, the crowd will line the track to give the maximum encouragement to the teams.
Runnerspace.com will have live chat and interviews....
Will come off on Saturday 8:30 pacific ( 11:30 eastern).
I'm projecting a 16 minute +/- few seconds finish with the American and Collegiate records going down.
Should be Fun!
16:10

I'm with you JK, this doesn't happen every year, or very often...and so it is very exciting.

The Oregonian's take..

The Oregonian still has either Biwott or Wall as the fourth member.
Also according to Mark Rowland, the OTC Elite will be helping the Ducks to the record, and not primarily competing as this is early in the season for them.

No. Only the collegiate record will be in play if he is on the Oregon "A" team.
