At 5 ft, 8 in, how much should an elite marathoner weigh on race day?
And how about for 5 ft, 9 in?
Thank you.

Are they starting a weight divison?
Haile was 61kg
Hall is 59
Radcliffe is 55
Dathan is 53
But how tall are they?
I am thinking an elite male at 5 ft 8-9 inch should weigh about 120 lb. Is this about right?
Females around 5'6" should be around 110 maybe 120 max.
Males at 5'10" should be around 135 - 140
5'9" and 120lbs seems a little too thin. At 5"9.5" and 127lbs I looked scary-skinny relative to all but the most freakish ectomorphs on the line.
And it's worth noting that at their peaks Bill Rodgers and Sebastian Coe were almost exactly the same dimensions -- If I recall right both were 5' 8-10", 130-135lbs.
Geb probably does not weigh over 55k. He certainly is not close to 61kg.
I compete as an elite female. I would recommend a professional analysis, if you are an elite male--or close to it. They take your frame, age, etc. into consideration and base it according to those variables.
Do not base it on anyone else. I know where my power base it, and do not go below that.
Good luck
I have read on Runners World message boards often that weight has nothing to do with distance running success.
It all depends on eating healthy. A 170 pound Geb would do just as well and on 30 mpw as long as he has the right attitude. He might even do better because many folks have run their PR with that weight and weekly mileage. It must be true.
Were they wrong?
If you are wanting to be as fast as you can for the marathon then have your body fat between 5% and 6.5% and don't carry too much extra muscle. And do all your running on concrete.
Probably between 125 and 135 would be best, but the right number depends on your genetic make-up.

That is correct. And he could go faster if he took some walking breaks every few miles.

Walking breaks? How long or how far are the walking breaks? interesting.
Most elite marathoners have BMI's in the 18.5-20.0 point range, with many in the 19 range.
Typical Japanese sub. 2.11 marathon guy
average 10,000 time = 28:20
average height = 1.69
average weight = 53kgs
In general, for success, you should be at least 15 less than your height in centimetres for your weight.

Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?
Instead of hyperventilating like a 17yr old on prom night worrying about your weight....worry about your training.
Train right, eat right....if you're still not shaped like a pencil with legs then so be it. Be happy with what you have.
Most people are simply not wired to be pencils with legs. These 5'8' 120lb pixies of men are genetically wired to be that thin. That is one of the reasons they are elite. Starving yourself to get thin without having the training won't make you a world beater.
Train harder, eat right. Let the cards fall where they fall.

True, just watched the workout Wednesday video on flotrack and the Hanson guys run 135-155 miles a week and look really thick compared to most marathon elites.

Exactly, I was never anywhere close to elite, just a 2:32 sub 16:00 guy on the roads, would average 90-100 miles a week for an entire year, would get up to 120 miles a week, would run 20-22 mile long runs and was still 5'6', 140-45lbs, but very lean (8% bf). Some people just aren't meant to be skeletons.

So a 5 ft, 8 inch male marathoner should weigh the same as a 5 ft, 8 inch female marathoner???Does this seem right?

For a rough approximation of weight, a marathoner racing weight should weigh 2 pounds per inch of height
example.
5'9'' = 69 inches
69 X 2 = 138 pounds.
This is for males and this is to be competitve. Some athletes are competitive at a heavier weight.
Your training should be your focus. The weight will take care of itself.
