The conversion is less of a factor than the fact those times were hand timed by a 70 year old. Sprint times in New Mexico outside of the state meet are meaningless.
Ah. I had no idea, thanks for the info.

I think you missed my point completely and I am not trolling. I listed those specific schools due to the fact that they are GREAT deca schools or have a GREAT Deca coaches but arent your normal big name Track schools. Beach seems like a smart kid so I am guessing he researched all his options and again I am sure he is going to do very well there academically and athletically. Could careless about their history of footlocker kids thats completely a seperate issue. Wish him the best.
You really have to know this young man. His Dad and I own a business together. I have had the opportunity to see more of Curtis both on and off the Track. Truly an exceptional person who comes from an outstanding family. If Duke is historically a "Black Hole" for track athletes as you say than I think you will get the pleasure of seeing yet another "record" smashed by Curtis Beach.
OK, I think the points have been made. As much as people on the outside might not see the merits of his decision to go to Duke (me included), I think Curtis did put a lot of thought into this. His decision is his own and I think it's time we all just wish him luck. If Duke felt like home to him and Shawn connected with him, it is hard to fault him on his decision.
Good luck Curtis.
cb can run . have seen this kid fly since he was 8 . tended to be a bit on his toes when younger with some injuries . not now . he works hard and studies hard also . his folks are good people and i'm sure were at least semi-influential in his school choice . lets keep it positive fellas and cheer him and his competition on .
greatest DUKE T& F male athletes 1/ DAVE SIME -multiple 9.3s tie wr, wr 220 and 220 hurdles - silver medalist 100 m 1960 OLYMPICS- 2/ Curtis BEACH - national hs record holder- decathlon- FUTURE ncaa deca. champ and 2012 OLYMPIAN - GOOD CHANCE AT MEDAL- GOOD LUCK - Satch- DUKE alumni
does Curtis have a sister named Jones or brother named Kahuna ?
congrats to BEACH! for becoming one of the best athletes in the United States history!
does anyone know how good this deca. record is in comparison to other hs records? To me its amazing especially considering its only mid April.Even without researching I doubt any 6 9 hjer has ever run this fast in the 1500 much less in the same meet. With some more throwing practice he could make our US team this summer.
He actually has an Aunt named Sandy Beach. She ran at Az State in the 80's.
2012 Olympian??? Well, let's see: Brian Clay, Trey Hardee and Ashton Eaton should all be Gold medal contenders in 2012. We could actually sweep the medals with those three. You feel Beach will be better than one of them? Which one? I think Curtis is terrific, but lets not get carried away. Give him a chance to develop before you set him up for failure.

The problem is that it is done with H.S. implements. Obviously, that doesn't affect things like the 1500 and HJ, but certainly plays a large role in the throws and the hurdles.
I think this is one of the barriers that Beach is going to face as he moves to the next level. While we're all in awe of him because his distance abilities, the decathlon is a speed and strength event. If you look at the scoring tables, they are dispoprotionately weighted to them.
In order for him to be competitive on the world stage, he's going to have become a much better thrower and much better sprinter.
I re-entered his stats, using some basic conversions, and giving him the benefit of the doubt, and using the international implements he'd probably score around 7,000 points. Certinaly good enough to win most conference champs, and hit a provisional (6,900), but the auto is 7,500 and the winner is usually well over 8,000 points.
Beach is a talented kid, but talk of him qualifying for world teams is nonsense.
I said " could" make team. Injuries or other mishaps are common in deca.other guys could be out. Event he should improve most in is lj, 48 400 man and 6 9 hjer should be jumping 24 6 . Also since he ran xc in fall could not have practiced other events that much. Is he already better than BOB MATHIAS was in prep school and won Olympic gold ? I also bet he could run 47.5 or better if he were fresh and already had not done 4 events. Its pretty hard to get "lucky" in deca as in other events .
Satch, here is what you said:
FUTURE ncaa deca. champ and 2012 OLYMPIAN - GOOD CHANCE AT MEDAL- GOOD LUCK - Satch- DUKE alumni
Nothing in there about "could".
one of my posts MEANT that SOME day he would MAKE Olympic team and maybe medal.2012 IS 3 YEARS AWAY and BEACH BOY should be a lot better . If he turns out GREAT he might turn pro and really go into full time training altho I hope he stays at Duke a long time.Just think, the worlds fastest caucasian and best cauc. decathlete both from DUKE THE ALMA MATER OF SATCH WORLDS GREATEST non pale MASTERS ATHLETE and track expert.
Satch, if you did in fact graduate from Duke, you should ask for a refund. They failed you Buddy. Wow.
I graduated from Duke with mediocre grades, entrance standards were much lower then ,especially for sprinters.AS for a refund ,just because I waste my time on LR and dont type well does not mean Im stupid , but I take your comment as a racial slur. I expect an apology Mr Racist.
This is amazing; I think most people don't understand decathlon scores and don't realize what this kid accomplished. His running and jumping is world-class and if he makes the adjustment to sr hurdles and impliments, 2012 s/b his goals.
Your words, Satch:"...the worlds fastest caucasian and best cauc. decathlete both from DUKE..."Who is the racist???

I'd say your conversions are WAAYYY off! I don't think saying he'd score 7,000 is giving him the benefit of the doubt, by any means.
I did the decathlon for over 12 years, and as a matter of fact, my throws were roughly in the same range as his when I came out of high school.
I'd say he'd probably lose about 6 or 7 feet in the shot, 15-20 feet in the discus, about 1 second in the hurdles, and I don't think the javelin would be much if any difference at all. I think the seniors are using the same javelin as college now.
If you take 7 feet off his shot, 20 feet off his discus, and 1 second off his hurdles... That STILL puts him at 7,544! I don't know where you came up with 7,000? I SAY NO WAY... Speaking from experience!
