Going off of Flovent for Good?

I have been taking Flovent for several years since I had two massive asthma attacks over a 6 month period that took me to the ER. Since taking it, I haven't had to use a rescue inhaler for over 2 years. I spoke to my doctor and he told me that I could lower the dosage of the Flovent and eventually stop taking it for good.

I cut the dose in half (am now on a pediatric dose of 88 mcg per day) and have been asymptomatic since decreasing it, but am wondering if anyone else has been on Flovent and then gone off of it for good. What were your experiences and did your running suffer?

I also take a beta 2 agonist before exercise and understand that I will have to go off of this if I stop the flovent for good. I have been good at asthma management, but really want to get off of the inhalers if possible. Any help or experiences would be appreciated. Thanks.

You are very fortunate to be able to get off all meds.

I am on just Advair now, but really have not needed albuterol for a few years (and a good thing as the non-aerosol inhalers are $45 on my co-pay!) In any case, you should probably keep a rescue inhaler handy at all times since you have a history.

How much do you pay for your Advair? I have a high deductible health plan and the cost is $201.00/month.

I am a 32 year male, a former (2 years ago) heavy smoker and I've been having shortness of breath for the last 3 weeks. Never had it before but I get it on mild exertion and feel it at rest since taking albuterol and Flovent. I've been on Flovent 110 mcg for 2 weeks now since my x ray 3 weeks ago showed increased central markings with peribronchial soft-tissue thickening consistant with asthma, bronchitis or allergies. I've always been active with weights, and some cardio despite my 14 year smoking history.

I too am wondering if 2 weeks of Flovent use is sufficient enough to dampen inflammation of the bronchials or am I looking at a life time of this stuff?

Are we to stop flovent automatically, or do we taper off the doses?

Hope you're successful in getting off the inhalers.

I take 2 puffs of 110 mcg in the morning and 2 before bed. I haven't had an "asthma attack" since I was a child. (I am 21.) I do recall have breathing trouble until I was 16ish.. and staring taking Flovent and it really helped.. At 17, I started running and this also helped a lot. (expect for some really hot summer days and really cold winter days).

My only experience off Flovent was a week in the hospital where I couldn't take it since my throat was practically closed (long story). My throat was so sore that I couldn't take it for another week as well.. I didn't really notice any difference... but it was only 2 weeks.
