I believe Chris Derrick will run some excellent 10ks in the next few seasons, but his best event will ultimately be the marathon if he chooses to pursue it. He never broke 2 minutes in the 800 until his senior year of high school (ran 1:58). He can mantain his speed for a long time though and is constantly improving. He even PRd in his last mile of the 3k at indoor nats (running around 4:12)
Last time I checked Fernandez hand picked thing race to "beat the Africans"... and then got 11th, so he dodged Rupp who would/will DESTROY him any distance, and then lost to EVERY scorer for the 'africans' (Ethiopia and Kenya) and you're impressed... wow that 3:55 is real impressive TT, but lets stop pretending the kid has show any sort of racing ability.

I am proud of the whole team, especially the three freshmen.
All three are warriors....but Derrick is showing a lot of class considering he is always with in seconds of German in races, times, and competition, but never complains of all the press going to German and is stand up guy. He is always really to run, compete, and show he belongs has one of the best Freshmen of all time. Just so happens German maybe the very best of all time. It is a exciting time for college running and I cant wait for the next 3 and half years. German mybe better but not by much......and Luke is right there to.

german is way better than derrick on the mile and 3000 and , sorry but i dont think german a cross guy and derrick is, if i remember correctly derrick did not even broke 7:55 for the 3000 and lost to kid from oregon,

The nerve of him. Just say the word and I'll shank him for you.

So you want to prove this kid has no potential by saying he will get destroyed by a guy who finished 20th in the same championship? While he was older I might add.
Why did GF run with gloves?

It's funny, the same could have been said about Galen Rupp up until this year. Going out and beating a Big 12 field by 10 seconds so it looks like a time trial isn't his fault, he didn't know everyone else in the race would puss out. If he had done the same at NCAAs would it have been a time trial? He's just that good. Let's not forget that Rupp was right around 10th place when he did this competition as a junior.
How can 15th be more impressive than 11th place. Brilliant run by both runners - stop with all the biased out looks on things. Both runners have great upsides, regardless, of how the chips may fall in the seasons to come. Let's give them a hand for racing well!
Um, to keep his hands warm.

Different perceived (and, at this point at least, actual) ability levels. Similar logic as to why some people feel it's worthwhile to point out the first non-african.
He ducked XC Championship, he ducked Indoor Championship... this is how patterns begin... if he knew he was going to skip NCAA's why even run an indoor race? For someone "injury prone" why risk running lots of tight curves at much fast than XC race pace... The kid decide to run Big 12's against a crappy field because he knew they didnt stand a chance in hell as long as he didnt let anyone stay in striking distance... wonder what he would have done in the PAC-10 or SEC...(duck not wanting to risk XC?)
Rupp finished 20th - 1:06 behind the winner - as an older "junior" than Fernandez, while being coached by Alberto.
I agree with what you said though.
C'mon - they both ran great - they're friggin' 19 years old and have great talent and guts. When I was 19 and a freshman I was trying to break 15 minutes for 5k and skipping classes and drinking too much. College is a huge adjustment and they're handling it well. As far as the Kenyans shutting out the U.S. team - hey, the Pittsburgh Steelers wouldn't even allow the Kenyans a field goal. XC is Kenya's national sport. If the US celebrated XC championships like the Super Bowl... we'd have a few more world-class runners. Runners here have to do so much on their own. [quote]..... wrote:

German's scholarship is for cross country and that's what he's running.
Why do so many people say German with a G rather tham Herman with an H. Don't they that Spanish is the language of Mexico and Hispanic-White ethnics.

ding ding ding..
Because Dave Smith got excited when he got in good shape and abandoned any plan and just let him race what he wanted
