Re: we also cut....why would three of your coaches be coaching distance and the other coach everything else? That is just plain stupid. And who coaches throwers? You need at least two of those coaches to be out in the field or with the throwers.....distance doesn't need three coaches!!! No wonder you have to cut...that is a terrible waste.
It's funny to read how many people are lining up to defend high school jogging while also demanding the success of the US's elite runners.
The same people that crucify Webb, Rupp, Oregon, Solinsky for letting us down also want to save the 2:53 800m runner.

what we also cut forgot to mention is that a lot of the reason we have cut times is for motivation. we found many of the kids were out for the wrong reason a few years ago, when we had 216 kids on the team. many of them refused to put in the work.
there is a difference between making cuts based on ability and kicking slackers off the team for not putting in the work. a 2:45 kid who works his ass off is more valuable to a team than a 2:15 kid that walks during training runs and doesn't get any faster

I went to a large high school with a large track team (200+ kids) and we should have had cuts. In the distance events and sprint events it wasn't that bad. But in pole vault and the jumps there were so many kids in each event that it was typical for every athlete to get in less than 5 attempts in a day. Most of the kids in these events were the slackers who wanted to get the easy A and did it because it looked cool and was an easy way for them to slack. As a result the athletes that actually had promise ended up getting cheated. Instead of getting the one on one attention that they needed to get better, they got minimal attention and not enough repetition to make practice worthwhile. I agree with We Cut. By cutting those who lack the motivation and desire, the quality of the coaching goes up for everyone. Cross country is far different because all you do is run, there isn't really any specialized instruction. But track is different. The field events and the hurdles take lots of one on one attention and a huge number of kids makes this impossible.
Actually at some schools it does count for a PE credit.
