Assuming:
Bolt 400m best: 45
Bekele 400m best: 50
Bolt may end up being a tick or two faster, Bekele may be close to 49 or as slow as 51. But these numbers are at least realistic.
Bolt would not be able to "wait and kick". Sprinters don't really wait. If Bolt "waited" for 400m he's be gassed.
600m would be close. Bolt being be gassed and dying. Bekele would be maintaining. Keep in mind the world record is 1:12.81 by 400/800 phenom Johnny Gray....one of the few athletes to possess both world class 800m and near world class 400m speed (I think he ran open 46 or 47?)
The race might look like this
100m splits:
Bekele:
:13
:12.5 (:26.5)
:12.5 (:39)
:12.5 (:50.5)
:12.5 (1:03)
:12.5 (1:15.5)
Bolt:
:11.5
:11.5 (:23)
:11 (:34)
:12 (:46)
:15 (1:01)
:15 (1:16)
For a sprinter, when it gets ugly...it gets ugly in a hurry. Sprinters are just that...sprinters. Once they go into debt they are going to start moving in s l o w m o t i o n.
