this is kid is insanely good.
But just for the record, Franklyn Sanchez was still 16 when he ran 8:49 indoors as a senior in HS.
This kid might be = to Sanchez's talent, and Sanchez was amazing. Hopefully this kid's career will pan out better than Franklyn's.
Lukas' performance in the 5000 meters is even more amazing when put in this context:
1) His time of 14.18 would have earned 14th place at last week's NCAA Division I Indoor Championships.
2) His time would have been a world record (outdoor)in 1932, bettering the mark of the legendary Paavo Nurmi.
3) His time is about 6 seconds faster than the women's world indoor record.

It was great to see the frosh break the old man from Ethiopia's record. The kid is 16 which is bit old fro a frosh, but at least he is honest about his age.
I really don't understand how the American system works.
Unless I'm wrong freshman means first year. How can you be 16 in your first year at High School?
Hard to believe that was just 5.5 years ago.
The best that never was.....

I don't know the specifics, but he would have started school in Lithuania before immigrating to the US at age 9. My guess is that he was effectively held back a year in the transfer, most likely to let his English language skills catch up.

Harder to believe that this thread was resurrected and that folks are still on here giving a damn about LV's age when he was a freshman.

Actually, that's not hard to believe at all. Really wish Lukas had stuck with running. Genuinely think he'd be running with/ahead of Cheserek right now.
He would be triathlon world and Olympic champ if not for the bike wreck.
