I'm a little ways East of Balboa Park (North Park/City Heights), so if anyone knows of anywhere near there, bonus points.
(Also, for any PBR lovers in the area--the Blue Foot Bar and Lounge at 30th and Upas has $2 PBR on tap all the time. A better non-Happy Hour deal in the area I have yet to find.)
That's a great question, and I don't have an answer. However, just SE of Balboa Park there is a smaller market (maybe something like "Parkside Market" or something similar) that sells 40s of Blatz Ice.

I love that bar! Dunno if you've been to Hamilton's a lil ways down 30th (more into South Park) but they seriously have the best selection of draft bees and it's a really good spot to hang out!

Buy some cans of Pabst Genuine Draft. You can't get that in many places around the US.

PBR has become the "ironic" trendy beer people in big cities drink these days (NYC, DC, Philly, etc) and has been for at least a year, if not more. It's not only absurd in theory, but it's driven up the prices of PBR at most bars in other areas too.
People are complete idiots.

PBR has been the hipster beer of choice for much longer than a year according to my Brooklyn-residing brother, and I'm not sure that it's entirely ironic. It's actually pretty tasty on tap or out of bottles (and cheaper than most beers that are equally tasty), and while it's obviously not anywhere nearly as good out of cans, it's better than most (if not all) piss-cheap can beers and is generally the same price as Coors, High Life, and the like (and cheaper than Bud).
But yes, I agree, people are idiots.

PBR actually became hip in 2001 with the college crowd in Portland OR. From there it spread. I sadly don't have a source for that to link to but I did read that in Brau International which is a beer industry magazine focusing on sales and trends. I remember this little stat simply because I was a college kid who turned 21 in Portland in 2001 and remember PBR being huge. Brau actually commented that it was that bit of good fortune that really saved the company. As to the original poster, the best place in SD to get a PBR is the Tower Bar, it's a crap hole that has a lot of charm. The last time I was there they had six taps total, and 3 of them were PBR. They also sell it by the can in varying size, and the bar specialty is the Pabst Smear, (a black and tan w/ PBR). Not sure if they still do it but Lady Dottie and the Diamonds used to play Monday nights at 10. Well worth going just for that.

On a side note, the bar in my college town has 50 cent PBR's and 50 cent wings on Tuesday. It is something I have come to love.

I drink what ever. If your at a house party, and they have a keg of PBR, you just drink it, it's also good at the beach. If I'm at a good bar in Portland, I'll usually drink something local like Hair of the Dog, Lauralwood, Widmer (stuff at the gausthaus like the KGB, not the Hefe since I can never find it super fresh) and what not. SD is also a great city for beer. I drink a lot of Pizza Port, Alesmith, and Ballast. The only beer I have a problem with is beer that is brewed poorly and has problems like diacetyl, skunked, or infected.
Went to a friend's wedding in '97 at Chapel Hill and the beer of choice was PBR at The Cave. So if the trend started in Portland in '01, I guess the TarHeels were ahead on their time.
My dad never stopped drinking PBR. It was the first beer I ever tasted.
Busch Light is what PBR used to be: cheap, with good flavor. PBR is overpriced now, but still as good as ever.
One beer that I never hear about anymore would be a great ironic choice: Old Milwaukee
Finally, they need to bring back Schmidt Big Mouth. Schmidt recently reformulated their brew back to the 1960s recipe, which I hear was pretty good.
