Why would the matchup of the second and third finishers in a race generate so much interest? You losers forget Chelanga will be the first across the line in that contest.

Galen will have his hands very full come June when they finally go head-to-head.
Galen can't even handle Fernandez, and Fernandez is 4 years younger than him...
Fernandez is by far the superior athlete. I think he'd also be much more marketable than Galen. Heh, lets face it, there's a reason you don't see Alan Webb doing commercials.

Rupp is 22.

IAAF tables:

German Fernandez 3:55.02
Galen Rupp 13:18.12
Those tables are less accurate when using a shorter distance to estimate a longer distance, especially for an athlete who has not yet proven himself at the longer distance. German has yet to run a fast 5000m. It takes longer to develop strength needed for distance, so give him a few years and he should be right there or surpassing Rupp. For now they are two different types of athletes; mid-distance vs long-distance.

Rupp is 22.
And he'll be 23 in just 2 months.
Fernandez won't be 19 for another 9 months.
Rupp is an another League.... GF has not proven himself in big time meets against big time comp. He still needs to sharpen his teeth, and until then, rupp has the upper hand. At the top level, experience will often trump talent, when the competitors are very close on paper.
IMO, latino-americans (and african-) physically mature at an earlier age. Even at this point, I would not be surprised to see Galen improve more throughout their great careers.

Finally, someone grows a pair and comes out and says it. Galen has had a steady curve of improvement throughout his career, and he is past the stage where his body is developing. We have NO idea how GF will react to a longer term plan for running. This is his longest healthy stretch of running ever, and until he goes a full year in college injury free, I personally consider him a ticking time bomb.
We need to see GF run a 5k first. If he runs under 13:30 without looking too stressed, then, yes, a race with Rupp would be very interesting.
Of course, it's looking more and more likely that German may not run NCAA outdoors this year. His coach has hinted at this already. That does not mean he won't run against Rupp, but it might be under different circumstances.
The reality is that German has not proven he is at Rupp's level at anything above a mile. He might be, but until he proves it he's not there yet.
Regarding the Pre vs Ryun comment from an earlier poster......I don't think they were ever in college at the same time.
If memory serves me, Ryun was HS class of '65, and Pre was HS class of '69.

Strictly speaking, Salazar was also high school coach. Galen's high school requires a some number of service hours from parents of enrolled students and Salazar, whose kids went to the same school, served his helping with the cross country team.
While it's true that Alberto's son attended CC, Alberto was the head cross country coach for five years (his son attended CC only the first year) and distance coach in track for four years.
There is no volunteer requirement for parents here at Central Catholic.
These two talents race this summer and the AR is going down - you heard it here first. Both guys are more than capable of sub 13:00. Kennedy never solo'd a 3:55 indoor mile and he sure couldn't run 27:23 in the 10k like rupp. Kiss the AR goodbye.

Cmon seriously? So umm bekele, haile, lagat just peaked oh so early because they were african and never improved? Please.. some should stop making excuses and realize German is the greatest talent to epheave from the U.S. to this date. No one JUST runs 3:55 < he flat out is the greatest talent
I would rather see them in a 2 mile. Right now, Rupp way more mature in the 5k whereas Fernandez superior in the mile. They shold collide in between!
A two mile between Rupp and Fernandez would be epic. Rupp would win the 5000.

There is no way to prove this of course, but Kennedy was targeting 27:00-flat as a new AR. He said publicly that it should not be that hard because it was after all, "Just two 13:30's ..."
BK ran just one 10k I think ... 27:37. It was his first and last track 10k I think.
Could he have done it? ... we'll never know. However, anybody who knows track knows that he could have done a 27:23 like you say he could NOT have. He ran dozens of 5ks under 13:20 and several under 13:10. 13:10 is about a 27:20 equivalent. Rupp, has actually run a 27:33.
You are correct. Your opinion does not constitute science. It does however constitute racism. Congratulations.

Hey Bamboo Cheetah, No scientist was merely giving his opinion about a physical maturation process. There was nothing racist about it. There are many studies about African (especially East African) runners and why they appear to be physically superior. Also, it just blows me away how ignorant and negative a lot of people in this forum can be. It's fine to have arguments but keep it civil.
As far as Galen and Fernandez (and all the others) I hope they help the U.S. become more competitive in the world arena. So far, they're doing amazingly well.
no, rupp would kick his ass.
