USATF's Standards for Accepting and Denying Entry into Nationals

Besides the time requirements, does anyone know the standards/factors USATF applies and process it undergoes when it determines whether to allow entry to a runner who hasn't technically met the qualfication standards. This issue came to head last year during the 10k when Goucher was allowed in, thereby bumping other athletes from the race. From what i recall from last year, such decisions are on a case by case basis and there aren't any published standards.

Also,I'd appreciate it if folks could share their experience with filing protests related to being denied entry into Nationals.

Check the 2009 USATF Rule Book:

Some rules have changed. There is now automatic qualification for everyone who was top 3 the year before and there are allowances to fill fields to make them competitive.

There is also a sub-committee charged with handling appeals.

"thereby bumping other athletes" I'm curious, how many athletes were bumped to make room for Goucher. Obviously more than one since you said athletes.

Thank you, I haven't had a chance to look at the rules but will do so. It's the "allowances" provision i'm probably interested in. For example where you have two athletes vying for 1 "allowed" spot to make the field competitive, how does USATF decide which athlete gets in.

I thought they finally ended up allowing runners 25-32 on the list to run the 10k. Goucher inadvertantly helped some dudes out.

no, they didn't, so no, he didn't, so yes, he's evil, and yes, you should fact check, and no, the USATF does not represent a fair body to govern the sport, so yes, we should revolt against them.
