IMO we expected more from Phelps than we did from Arod. We all assumed that Arod was on roids for a long time, but we didnt think Phelps was out smoking weed at parties.

phelps made a dumb mistake (probably more than once)
Arod made a dumb mistake more than once.
Phelps' illegal substance was one almost certainly Arod has used as well
Phelps' illegal substance didn't improve his athletic performance
'nuff said
Does any person really cares that Phelps smoked the dopest dope.
Sounds like "troll alert" could use a hit off Phelps' bong.
"Guess what, next time you're thrust in a position that demands stupidly high pressure and expectations and screw up, don't expect anyone to feel bad for you." -This quote contradicted everything your ignorant post tried to say. You basically admit here, that he did mess up, and the rest of your offensive words say that Phelps' only job is to swim. Good try.
As a letsrun.com poster you are thrust into a position that demands more than shit talking. Therefore, you fail.
I would have to agree that morally a-rod's was worse, and financially phelp's was worse. the big picture though i.e. LEGACY, a-rod is screwed waaaaaaay worse.

Alan Webb is more messed up than these two.
Leave Alan Webb alone!
Let's compare, A-Rod took steroids and this does not surprise many people because many baseball players have been using steroids over the past few years.
Phelps, argubaly an American Hero who became an icon for millions of people across the WORLD, gets caught smoking weed, and all of sudden, Phelps is a phony. Back in August, nobody (on letsrun at least) negatively pointed out his facial deformities he was born with. After the letsrun population found out about the weed picture, tons of people were making fun of the way he looks (a new low).
Seriously, is this how America treats its heros? It sickens me when sports commentators on stations like ESPN talk how Phelps deserves to be banned from swimming for smoking a little reefer when they were probably doing the same thing or have done the same thing when they were Phelp's age.

A-Rod broke the law, and technically did not cheat by the MLB's standards at the time.
Incorrect. MLB has prohibited the use of anabolic steroids since 1991, if not earlier. It just never enforced the ban until the BALCO bust.
If "messed up" means screwed up his own life by using illicit drugs, it seems to me that Phelps "messed up more." A-Rod's drug use has probably made him many millions of dollars through performance enhancement, and he's not giving that money back. Phelps's drug use has cost him millions of dollars that he's probably never going to see again.
If I could see their finances, it would be easier to decide.
A-Rod was relieved that it was his past performance enhancing drugs that was revealed rather than his current homosexuality.
Phelps. Wasting his talent doing drugs. Arod is using drugs to maximize his talent. Not to mention I am pretty sure he has a couple hundred million more.

Who effed up more? Phelps or Arod?
Who reckons the other A-Rod...Andy Roddick...looked a bit more full at this years Australian Open?
In what way? Clearly Arod did something that enhances performance and Phelps did not. Financially it will hurt Phelps more. But it may cost Arod the hall of fame. Imo Phelps did something that's basically harmless. The only reason grass is illegal is because the way history played out. If he was caught drinking a beer it wouldn't be a big deal. Most who've tried both alchohol and grass would agree that alchohol is far worse in every way.
A-Rod is the worst. He has purple lips.

Why is this even a question. They both screwed up a good thing. Don't smoke pot. Don't do steroids. Why does it matter who screwed up worse? Both of them really regret getting caught, although I don't honestly think either of them regret doing what they did if they didn't get caught (but they would never say that publicly).
It depends on how you look at it.
A-Rod messed up more because his usage helped his performance, AND he lied about it for years including that infamous interview with Katie Couric.
BUT, what Phelps did was far more stupid. He will never make the money A-Rod has and will, and his big money opportunities spike around the Olympic Games. To get caught smoking pot during a severe recession when companies are just looking for a way to not have to pay him anymore. Just really stupid.
Baseball is a joke. When will we discover that Manny Ramirez was using, or what about Griffey Jr.? It's very possible that Chipper Jones is the best player in baseball right now and we just never knew it because anyone with better stats is using steriods. No sport is followed for stats more than baseball, and these guys have screwed that up forever.
I think we can all agree that both effed up alot. But id like to make two points.
Roids while being illegal, do work. They are performance enhancing. So atleast A-Rod had baseball on his mind while shooting up. Weed on the other hand is not performance enhancing. Phelps acted like a 23 year old, and stop caring about the responsibility and consequences of his actions.
Secondly, As a moderate baseball fan, I hate to see a star like A-Rod juicing it. He is still in the MBL. I don't expect too much from those money grubbing bastards. But Phelps is an Olympian. To me that means something. You are held to a different standard, in my mind, then other athletes. You represent your country, and Phelps embarassed the entire US olympic community. On top of all that he is a goofy looking kid.
I vote Phelps.
I wasn't surprised by A-Rod getting caught and trying to come clean. I assume most Baseball players are or have used PEDs so all of their reputations have already been tarnished.
Phelps was being a stupid kid. I think more people look up to him and held him in higher regard than A-Rod. His reputation took a bigger hit in my opinion.
wow there are some really f-ed up priorities here. A-rod wasn't as bad because he was only cheating to be better at baseball?? really? tell me how exactly michael phelps has let anyone down. does it really invalidate his success because he smoked some weed? he was also apparently drinking and probably pretty shitfaced at this party, but so far i haven't heard anyone claim his alcohol use was disappointing or letting the fans down. the guy has previously been busted for DUI, which could have easily led to someone's death, but that is forgivable and smoking a little weed is not? honestly people, get off your self-righteous high horses. i know it pisses some of you tight-asses off that there are people who are much better athletes than you will ever be that can still have the audacity to have a good time occasionally. i know it stings that you've denied yourselves fun and new experiences hoping that that joint you didn't smoke or that party you didn't go to is going to pay off in the end. but in reality, you're stuck in mediocrity and michael phelps is doing EVERYTHING that you wish you could. and i know it's tough to realize that what you've been beat over the head with since 6th grade DARE class wasn't the truth, but you need to let it go. michael phelps has worked harder than probably any of you ever have, but somehow you see an opportunity here to feel superior to an olympic champion. if you need that to get you through the day, i'm sorry. but realize that michael phelps doesn't give a shit what you think, and maybe someone who has won 14 olympic medals and can also enjoy an activity that 40% of americans ADMIT to knows a little more about balancing work and fun than people who have done neither.
