Funny you should mention that. I spotted Phil Knight at Pre's grave once with a long bamboo straw stuck in the grave. He was sucking the last DNA cells out of Pre's rotting body.

Oregon is now the mecca of the distance running world.
... she just couldn't get the "Come to Oregon" chant from the trials out of her head.

Oregon has no sales tax, and has the 2nd highest number of strip clubs per capita in the nation (next to West Virginia). What's not to like?
So, she can get a part-time job if she wants?
Those advising her (parents/HS coach??) must be clinically retarded to pass on an elite Stanford degree. It’s sad day for higher education.

This sentence makes my brain hurt.
exactly. choosing your program can't be done on paper, which is why you take a recruiting trip and make a subjective judgment on what you believe will work best for you. she obviously 'liked' Oregon the best, awesome.
First off this was not a mistake. you forget that vin is one of the best recruiters in the nation. to top it off her education depends on what she wants to do with her life. If she wants to become a doctor, sure it possibly was a mistake. But there are plenty of losers at Stanford.
I know one gal that has an undergraduate and graduate degree and can't hold a job. I know another who focused on running, is now in his 30's and can't find a job.
and what if she wants to beocome a teacher? I know people who teach that graduated from Stanford, Cal, Columbia, Etc. You know what? They get the same shit pay as the dude who graduated from the state college. Sad but true...
The fact is, before you pass judgement there are many factors to consider. Maybe Stanford would be too hard. Maybe she want to go pro and knows Oregon is the place to be to do that. And as I said, don't forget that Vin is one hell of a recruiter and once worked at (and knows the dirt on) a place called Stanford.

Exactly!

.
Let's remember that Letsrunners tend to be incredibly short-sighted and more often than not, downright stupid. If Hasay is as smart as purported to be, she will do fine at Oregon even if she wants to attend the best medical schools in the country. Prestige of an undergrad school can help get a foot in the door but a bright student can succeed from anywhere. End of story.
That said, I'm kind of disappointed that she chose Oregon, which has kind of earned a rep as the Evil xc/track Empire, mostly due to being owned by Nike and all.
Oregon is now the mecca of the distance running world.
Correction. For US colleges only. Oregon produced 0 medals in Beijing.
It's pretty simple really. At Oregon, she is going to be a celebrity on campus and around town. People are going to say hi to her and ask about her race, cheer for her at meets, the register guard will write numerous articles about her, etc etc. At Stanford or Washington, no one knows or cares about what she does. She's basically just another college student. At Washington, the only reason people know they won the the national championship was because it was in the school newspaper. Other than that, most people don't even know they have a cross country team. If you were in her position, for the next 4-5 years of your life would you rather a public celebrity, or just another nobody. I think its pretty obvious.
How many distance medals did the US win in total in Beijing?
This is a quote from a flotrack interview a while back that might explain why she choose Oregon.
“We are kinda looking for a program that has a coach that supports individualized training and doesn’t apply the same running stuff to everyone because everyone is different.”
So it sounds like a Rupp scenario where Jordan will continued to be coached by her high school coached and Vin will just be holding the stop watch and cheering her to run faster.
I just can't wait until her first race after she has been sleeping in her altitude tent for a couple of months, has a breathe right strip on, a singlet with multiple bullet holes, wearing arm sleeves to help keep her elbows warm, and then as she gets ready to cross the finish line she flashes up the "O" sign in victory.
I think it is now official to say that Jordan Hasay is the female version of Galen Rupp!!
I remember when Vin was coaching jennings and stember, and despite them both leading the NCAA and the professional american runners that year in the 1500, there training was very different and tailored to each of them. Shoot Lunn was being trained by Vin and also was one of the top 1500 guys that year and again had a very different training schedule. It was very tailored depending on what Vin knew about their strengths and weaknesses (mentally & physically). The result was they were the top 3 (or at least 3 of the top 4) 1500 meter runners in the country that year.
Maybe this is more what she's talking about.
Maybe she looked around both and simply liked oregon better, and thought it would suit her more. Like someone else said, bright people can succeed anywhere. I'm sure people from oregon have gone on to do good things.
Honestly, only the FB players are known around town. Runners are strangers in Eugene. The new Eugene public library has a few nice pictures of Oregon runners for historic and PR purposes, but they are not the interest of everyday people in Eugene. Eugene has been besieged by homelessness and meth addiction for a long time, and more recently by illegal immigrants from south of the border. There's been a rash of armed bank robberies, and burglaries recently.
Wow, a lot you people just dont know about the history of University of Oregon and running, its world class facilities and support(from fans, Nike, etc), and the experiences that Jordan Hasay has had there. You forget she is first and foremost a runner and Eugene, Or. is the mecca of track and field in the USA. This is why people refer to Eugene as Track Town USA and why they held the Olympic Trials for Track and Field there in 2008 and will do again in 2012 and why they will hold the 2009 and 2011 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships there. Also, the Prefontaine Classic is held there and is one of the premier track and field events in the US and attracts world caliber athletes. Hayward Field is simply unbelievable, the stadium holds 21,000 compared to 1,700 at Stanford, and if you get a chance you should go to one of the track events there because you will understand how electric it is. The support in Oregon for running is huge and UofO track and field attracts way more attention from its fans than Stanfords. She is sure to be a celebrity there. Finally please remember that she set the national high school record in the 1500 at the Olympic trials in Eugene in 2008 in front of a crowd of at least 20k and that she won her first national championship there when she was in 7th grade, and was recently quoted as saying, \"I remember looking at the huge stadium and telling my Mom that theres no way I could run in front of all those people\". And lets also not forget about Oregons ties with Nike. This is probably where she\'ll make most of her money; through endorsements.
Actually, Jordan mentions getting into the honors college, which is quite impressive. It is a much more intensive program within the University of Oregon.

Maybe Stanford has better academics that Oregon. But maybe Hasay wants to study a subject that Oregon is renown for. Who knows? Maybe Nike gave her family illegal stuff under the table.
