If she is smart enough, she can get a Stanford degree when she is done with running.
Make the most of what you've got. If I were in that position, I would have picked Stanford. I am not nearly the runner she is, so my priorities are different.
If I was a world class junior runner, I would pick the school I thought would put me in a better position to make money off of my insane talent once I got my degree.
RE: Why the heck did Jordan Hasay choose Oregon????

Why does anyone ever choose a lesser academic institution, if they could have gained admission? I went to UO and would certainly admit that Stanford's reputation is better.
Is it possible that some people choose their college by some method other than "Let me pick the highest-rated academic institution to which I can gain entry?"
To me asking "Why did (fill in the name of a distance runner) go to Oregon?" is kind of silly. Really, you're surprised that a distance runner would want to run at Hayward, eventually run the NCAA championships and the Olympic trials on your home track? There are other good running schools, sure -- and I wouldn't have blamed Jordan at all if she had chosen UW or Stanford -- but Oregon does offer certain things that are unique. -
Maybe Stanford has better academics that Oregon. But maybe Hasay wants to study a subject that Oregon is renown for. Who knows? Maybe Nike gave her family illegal stuff under the table.
Remember the girl from Ohio that broke the Kenosha course record and is not at Stanford on an all-academic scholarship NOT running at all.
Different strokes for different folks. -
She probably feels she has the potential to do more with her running after college and so she picked the program she felt would better help take her there. It's no different than a football player who had a choice between, say, Stanford and USC picking the latter because he felt it would be better for him in terms of preparing him for a possible pro career.

possibly? wrote:

If I heard the soundfeed correctly, she talked about wanting to understand the science behind running. As an Ex Science grad from a top 10 grad school, I have never heard about Oregon having a great program. Someone is blowing up her ass if she thinks they have great academics. I have heard of Stanford's Human Biology program. -
I can't tell you why Hasay chose Oregon. I can speculate that her choice not to attend Standford was the result of the school hiring a women's coach with almost no proven success at coaching collegiate women--let alone someone with Hasay's talent. This is not a slam on Coach Jason Dunn (his reputation will be set in stone in 2-3 years with this recruiting class) but simply a speculation as to why she might choose another school. And, as anyone on this board who follows my meandering posts will tell you, I am the farthest thing from a Nike/UofO sympathizer.

What do you mean "not at Stanford"? Durkin is indeed at Stanford but she is VERY smart... she got into MIT as well. I hope she runs for the team next year.
I would bet that was a typo. People type "not" for "now" pretty frequently.

And for those asking "Why turn down Stanford?"--I turned down Stanford *and* Caltech when I went to college (at a low Ivy). Why? I thought the program I got into was a better fit for what I wanted.
I'd guess the same is likely true for JH.

Plus, if things don't work out she could transfer to Stanford after two years at Oregon. Then, while waiting out her year of collegiate ineligibility, she could focus on getting ready for the 2012 trials and not be distracted by team commitments. -
Actually, she couldn't transfer to Stanford after 2 years. Since its also in the PAC 10 she would lose an entire year of eligibility athat she couldn't get back (from red shirt or any weird loop holes). This means once she's at Oregon, she's nearly locked out of UW and Stanford. I don't disagree with her choice, but for running I don't understand completely why she wouldn't choose the best... which is obviously UW without any shadow of a doubt.

Oregon has no sales tax, and has the 2nd highest number of strip clubs per capita in the nation (next to West Virginia). What's not to like?
-
Big difference between comparing Stanford and USC and Standford and Oregon.

Obviously it's the local cuisine. Lock Yuan Restaurant has $2 lunches, great for runners with their figure on their minds. Muchas Gracias is open 24 hours a day, several locations near campus. Evergreen has a great Indian buffet. Track Town Pizza is Shakey's for real but you can inhale pizzas and beer with Pre watching over you. Toshi's Ramen is where the Bohemian elites hang. Low on cash ? you can always get a free bite at the St. Vincent De Paul center or Union Mission in the 4 corners area. That's only a sampling of the fine cuisine that we have here in Track Town USA.

Isn't Pre dead? -
She's quite smart and she'll probably thrive anywhere and my guess is when she gets out of college and finishes running, she'll have no lack of options. Many of her comments today seemed to indicate that she just believes Eugene is an important place to be, given the national meets, including the 2012 Trials, that will be there.
Heck, I honestly don't believe she'll get a bad education, and if has any problems, Phil Knight will HIRE better professors for the U of O. -
huh?? wrote:why did she chose Oregon???
Because she wanted to. -
Jordan has a desire to study Human Physiology at Oregon. If you listened to her interview, you would have heard that she also hopes to be selected into the highly acclaimed University of Oregon Honors College program..the same program that my own daughter pursued...before later being accepted at Stanford for her masters program. Eugene and the U of O provide a great undergraduate "experience"...to hell with all you idiots who are impressed by the PR "ratings" put out to sell magazines. For one thing, those "ratings" are highly skewed toward research universities and post-bacc. programs. Those things have little to do with an intelligent distance runner who wants to enjoy her college experience and set herself up with the best possible chance to succeed as a runner. Good for you, Jordan. Shame on you negative posters who would question the decision of a young lady who probably has five times the IQ of many of you.
-
Sometimes I think runners under Letsrun watch do things just to piss you guys off. Considering Stanford is even talking about cutting their sports programs, I think she made the right decision.
She'll do fine at Oregon. Get off her nuts. -
it would have been nearly impossible for her to make a bad decision. can anyone really say that oregon, washington, or stanford would be bad for her? unless you are a fanboy or a hater i don't think you can.
the better question is will hasay/brasovan/kroeger succumb to the girls footlocker champion curse? -
If you wanted to do something like be a school teacher, then the differences wouldn't really matter. We don't know her plans.
-
Plus, maybe you're more likely to be at the top of the class if you're a smart person attending a somewhat less cutthroat school (just saying as an example I don't know what Stanford or Oregon are actually like).

nope... wrote:I don't understand completely why she wouldn't choose the best... which is obviously UW without any shadow of a doubt.
washington is the best for now, but oregon/eugene has unmatchable tradition
for example, i would send a girl to saratoga over fm, even though fm has been better the past few years. you have to consider perfect storms of talent vs. ability to produce championship-contending teams year-after-year
and it sounds like OTC was a significant factor in her decision, and OTC>>>>washington xc team
