You've hit the nail on the head. We need more Malmos.
How many good steeple coaches are there in the US? How many talents like Dan Lincoln are there in the US who are willing to commit to the effort to make the steeple their primary event?
Who are the three US collegians to run under 8;20?

We need more people living like monks, dedicating the first 30 years of their life to running. They could live on peoples floors and beg for money from any business willing to give out some support. They will make the same amount in a lifetime that you could make in your first 5 years as an attorney or doctor, but hey, being a legend on letsrun is more important than having a career.

too bad you didn't have the guts to see it through like Malmo and many of his 'pre-pro' era. They have something that you will never have or never understand; so, just move along my sad friend, nothing to see here.
No matter what Kool Aid Mary Wittenburg serves at her press conferences, our top distance guys are NOT on the verge of greatness or world dominance any time soon, and there is no depth beyond the first 1 or 2 spots. In the men's marathon, Ryan Hall is world class...but he is NOT A WINNER yet on the world stage. As far as the 2008 men's list is concerned, any men who have run slower than the women's world record do not even belong on the radar screen. Bill Rodgers once said that sub-2:12 was the "real nitty-gritty" of world class marathoning; well, today sub-2:08 is the new world class.
In the women's marathon, AT THE PRESENT TIME we have no world class women. Until Deena produces again (and yes, she has a medal AND a win at a major city race, London, that confirms that she WAS great a few years back), she is yesterday's news. Blake Russell and Magdalena Lewy Boulet are nice girls who would have shocked the world with their running abilities in, say, 1980. Kara looks like the only genuine hope for the next four years, if AlSal doesn't fry her first.
In 2008/2009, we simply can't get excited when a US man runs 2:11 or a US woman just breaks 2:30. On the world stage, these times are meaningless (though they will get you a stint sitting at a shoe expo signing posters, I suppose.)

his best steeple according to tilastopaja is 8:21.72 which would put him #5 on the origial posters list and he ran that in 1978 so 3o years ago.
Off that list, only Huling and Olinger train together. I hope they have a great year so other distance guys see how effective training partners are.
Fam will not stop running steeple. Lincoln is back training under Schumacher is the rumor!

I think that someone has got his facts wrong.

ok, so Malmo's pr was 8:21, not 8;20; but the main point of the OP still rings true. let's see the forest, not the trees.
since we are talking about american steeplers what happened to tim broe who ran an 8:14 steeple a couple of years ago?

Then it's up to you to become one of the trees.

How about just being a legend in one's own mind?
jk.
Not insinuating anything about Malmo. I'm pretty sure his and others' motivation for getting really good at running is/was something other than impressing some people in a public forum and/or having some kind of American Dream career, a trophy housewife, a nice house in the 'burbs, a BMW and 2.5 children. See Denis Leary's "A$$hole" video. Hilarious.
I'm sure that with the improvement in tracks, shoes, socks, shoelaces and coaching those guys from 25 years ago would all be running sub 8.

Yeah, that PROVES that evolution is a crock of shit! Otherwise, how is it possible that the top guys today are only about the same speed as the top guys 25 years ago?
I love all the posters who are saying we need more guys to do the same thing the guys 25 years ago did. But wait, we just showed that Malmo's AR would have only ranked #5 on this year's list! So why do we need to emulate those guys? Because they had better hairstyles?
(Before anyone gets upset: I know, I know, the rest of the world has moved on. If Malmo had been running against Shaheen's 7:53 speed instead of Rono's 8:06 speed, he would have automatically run 13 seconds faster. Of course.)

Where was Aaron Aguayo this year??
And why do some of you guys get all up in arms when the USA isn't raping the rest of the world in something, it's okay you know.

NO, THE US HAS TO BE #1 IN EVERYTHING AND IF WE ARE NOT, WE HAVE TO WORK AND WORK UNTIL WE ARE. And you use a poor choice of terms in 'raping' you stupid jackass.
Just wait until Chris Solinsky makes his debut this year in The Steeplechase. From Steeplechase to the next I can wait for that
