Don't do it man, go to an indoor track at least. Month of treadmill will ruin any training you've done.
Junky and junkier. Don't do it man. Those are machines for people who think they might walk a mile three days a week. They will not hold up to the pounding of a couple that actually runs.
Search on "landice" in this forum.
I recently got one and ended up paying a bit over $2,000 for a slightly used True, from a dealer so I got the full warranty. Base model; plenty of bells and whistles for me. People (including Treadmill Doctor) recommended the Landice, but it was quite a bit more expensive.
I was told to get at least a 3hp motor because otherwise I'd burn the thing out in no time.
I don't really want to get into one that will be crappy in the long run. I was wanting something that would be able to handle 6:45 - 7:15 pace for 5 or 6 miles at a time for me and then slower for my wife. Am I better off trying to find a used one at a play it again sports type of place? I just don't want to rush out and spend $600 on a piece of crap that won't last.
Thanks for the info so far...
That's the pace I was thinking of. CraigsList had either low-end ones (which you don't want) or refurbished commercial ones, with no warranty. As to the latter, there were plenty under $1,000 (here in NY at least). That's not a bad option. But I was told to only get a refurbished one.
I went to a couple of stores that specialize in treadmills, etc. to talk to the salesmen there. They push the higher end stuff, but I made it clear I wanted the basic model, and it was through one of them -- Gymsource -- that I got the used one.
Nordic track commercial 1500.
before you buy, make sure the plane will take off on your treadmill...else the treadmill is crap
I second the treadmilldoctor.com recommendation - I've e-mailed him before for advice on belt maintenance and found him to be very knowledgeable.
The Nordictrack 1500 already recommended is actually a pretty decent model for what you're describing. I believe that you can find that one at Costco. I've essentially the same model ( it comes under the Epic brand as well) with a different display/control set. I picked it up at Costco last year at this time and managed to get it for $600 ($200 off of regular cost since it was a display model). Very reliable for 6:00 to 8:00/mile training.
I'd stay away from the Nordic Track. These folks don't seem too satisfied.

Stay way from Nordic Track. Seems like they have a bad rep and don't stand behind their product.
