these ( second roll of 5 on the page) are right after the injury
Look at the flange on Fernandez' shoe how high it is and curves inward to push right into his achilles, especially traumatic under pressure at finish of the support phase when pushing off from the ground.

Compare that with the non existant flange on the Portland guy's shoe. Whatever the immediate cause of Fernandez' injury, those are bad shoes and not good for his feet.
Another thing is the soles are too thick, more likely a cause of sprains especially on cross country courses.
Better would be thinner soles like the shoes of Derrick and the guy from Portland, sorry am not familiar with his name.
It was probably the Derrick kid who spiked him... he's a jealous loser who can't accept the fact that German is way, way better than him. Glad Luke beat him, go Luke!
If anything, I blame coach Smith for what happened to German. He was already slightly injured, yet ran at Regionals. That, plus allowing him to wear those inappropriate shoes for the condition that his achilles was in prior to this race. I think some of the blame needs to go to the coaching. Also, what was the deal with German's two teammates? They absolutely folded at about the time of German's injury. Coaching is again suspect here. All three of them went out far too conservatively, then at about 7K, they had to race to catch up to the pack. I suspect all three of them went into a bit of Oxygen debt...look at German's race before the injury, he looks pretty stressed to me. I thought it before, but now I am all the more convinced that GF made a big mistake by holding out for Okie State's full scholariship ride. How much better would he have been to taken a partial from Oregon and had Puskedra and Centro to run with for four years?

if that's the case I believe we will see it happen quite often
word on the street is that the hole in the Matumbos he was wearing caused this catastrophe!!!
Long live miler xc's and vents!!!
Enough with the "he was spiked" theories. He already was nursing an achilles injury and he most likely messed it up accelerating through a series of ruts in spikes not suited for someone nursing a problematic achilles
Unfortunately, the pictures I have before German's fall are of Rupp. I didn't even realize I had the pictures of German falling until I got home. Sorry I can't help.

On the contrary, It's a great photo, of an unfortunate incident.
How about a photo of Rupp and Chelenga together with the field out of focus in the background??
Thanks for posting.
