Unfortunately there is a bit of history with that achilles. It's the same one from back in April and more recently the week leading up to Nationals he had actually taken a few days off because it was bothering him. He looked especially smooth as he came by me and was without a doubt looking to pass the trail pack and start gunning for Rupp and Chelanga. The team strategy was to go out slowly and move up as the race unfolded. It was being executed perfectly by at least a few of the OSU guys although some looked like they were running just a little too comfortably for my liking. No one was going to beat Oregon and sometimes it's better to run for second. I'm still not sure why they wouldn't unleash German earlier. The pack mentality from previous meets can only go so far.
It looks pretty obvious that he has either injured his achilles or his soleus and was likely not spiked. Interestingly, Biwott is looking back to see what is going on. The amazing thing about letsrun posters is that several claim that he was running at the front of the pack, in third place. Looking at the photo, it is obvious that Kiptoo-Biwott and Puskedra were leading that pack with Fernandez, in about 7th or 8th place and not a certain third place finisher by any stretch.
It was the ease at which he was running and the apparent move forthcoming. You can see it in the eyes !
More lkike Fernandez in ~5-6th.. ahead of that Stanford guy.

Clearly, it was Frank Shorter who was responsible.
Luckily, he took pity on German and didn't kill him as he has done in the past.
Fortunately Fernandez has come back from those other times.
Dude, are you serious? Less than 2K before that picture was taken, German was over 10 seconds behind 3rd place. He and Koskei caught that pack like it was nothing from 5K-6K. He was looking great!
And, if you look at how much German can put on Koskei (like at Big 12s for example), he very likely would have had 3rd place (3rd place was just 7 seconds in front of Koskei).

I have a couple more pictures a few seconds after that and his grin doesn't go away. Kind of strange.
Haha, Bumbalough just laughing his ass off about it all.
Seriously, though, that's just how he looks when he runs. Baring his teeth and all. It's like an entire 10k's worth of Colgate Whitening commercials.
Does anyone have an accurate assessment of German's injury, sevrity and expected recovery time?
Thanks
he died in the hospital.

Not commenting on the wisdom of the statement, just reporting what I readhttp://www.talk.dyestat.com/showthread.php?t=95052&page=10I know Chris and German were pretty close, so this might be the truth.
this pic shows german moving up at the 7k mark (approx)....right before his injury
german passing derrick around the 7k or 8k mark.....luke is just a head of him
Rumor is that German and a couple other Okie St. runners ran too slowly, then they had to run their asses off to catch up with the lead pack. Rather than suffer the humiliation of his teammates who fell back into the pack, he faked an injury. If you remember the Cal State HS championships, he collapsed at the finish, feigning exhaustion for the fans...then a couple seconds later, he got up and was smiling and laughing. Overdramatization?
That's a lame rumor.
Is it possible that he pulled a Paula? He knew he couldn't win so he quit?
considering ok st. was in the hunt for top 3, he probably realized they needed a good finish from him to get there and wouldn't have dropped just because he wasn't going to win the thing.
Did the Iona guy spike him on purpose or was it an accident?
