Runner turns down Rhodes Scholarship to run nationals

The difference between "turns down Rhodes Scholarship" and "decides to skip Rhodes interview" is not just a matter of a few words -- it's a difference so enormous that this entire topic should go away.

Why would he write a letter to his teammates? It's not like he chose not to run and needed to explain to his teammates why he chose not to go to nats. Was he fishing for compliments?

Per usual for Letsrun, this thread is turning infantile and the little sh!ts are starting with their sniping about a situation they know nothing about.

This was probably an internal matter and it's gotten way overblown and the OP should be ashamed for even starting this thread.

i don't think you understand how odd the Grinnellians are...

Grinnell, Iowa is like OZ. it is a very strange place to say the least. My team had a track meet there one year. As i was warming up we ran into the quad. they had some medieval fair going on... no big deal, however, two of them turned around and yelled, "INVADERS!!!!" and starting waving their swords at us. i was rather confused.

also, everytime they win an award, the act like a kangaroo up to the awards stand. (i know, they do it to remember a former runner).

needless to say, they have a very, very liberal campus. (not a slight, it's just very liberal) also, it is a really, really good school... it's just in OZ

i would like to add, Grinnell has a great team mentality. Henry and the other guys are class acts.

YES the fact that he is a D3 runner and is less talented than D1'ers should count for something. He ran over 26 minutes for the 8k! You could field a JV team at some high schools that would run that fast. The guy is obviously trying to make a name for himself. He probably knows he has no shot at either the scholarship or the race so he tries to get himself this publicity so that he can hear his name. Get over yourself. You won't be all-american and you won't get the scholarship. Sure, I may not have the brains for the scholarship, but at least I could be all-american.

What an idiot. He is d3!!! You go to D3 for the academics, not the athletics. He is not some stud or anything. He is throwing potentially throwing away a great scholarship for what? The team qualified, that should be good enough. If he was going to place athletics above everything else then he should have gone D1. Nuff Said.

Turning down "Baby Nationals" is no big deal! Here in Chicago you will find harder competition at the local road races. Please, in the future don't use word "Nationals" without Division three followed bt it. You get it? Other words it is very misleading! I thought it was the "Big Dance" you writing about. Shit Fire save the matches! This is small peanuts!

He has the chance to run at Nationals. D1, D2, or D3, it is still Nationals, and there are more teams sitting at home, than there are going. He and his team worked very hard to get there, and probably sacraficed as a whole to do that. If he is good enough to be considered for the scholarship, then he is obviously somone of great character, and what shows more character than standing with your friends/team in their time of need?

Last time I checked this board was for all levels of running, not just D1. Diii is a big deal for a lot of people who use this website. Maybe if the future, topics should be limited to the olympics and worlds. After all, D1 is "small peanuts" in comparison.
