Some of us old farts can run
Your 4-year progression is remarkable, and inspiring as such.
All the best in your quest on Sunday.
Derek Turnbull ran 2.38 at 60 and 2.41 at 65. Derek was still banging out sub 5 for a mile at 65 and was running about 4.40 at 60. I would think typically a 5min mile = roughly a 2.45 marathon, this is based on the guys I've run with over the last 35 years, not on some chart.
As for sub 3 at 50, well i'd think it is only really = to something like a 2.45 for younger runners. Most 2.40ish guys can still break 3 easily at 50 if they are still fit and in one piece. Of course THAT is the challenge for us long time runners -stay relatively free of injury.
For the latecomer to running it should be an easier job provided they haven't abused their bodies too much in younger years.
Aussie Tom Roberts ran 4.05.20 for 1500m as an O50 some years ago. That was the world age best at the time, don't know if it still stands. Jack Foster ran 2.20 (off 1/2 arsed training) at age 50. Jack, of course managed a handy 2.11 at 40 and was around 2.15 at 45.
This thread has been a bit of a motivator for me.
A couple of mates have spoken about returning (after a long absence) to the 6 Foot Track Marathon. This event is the Aussie long course mountain running champs, 45kms and about 1500m of elevation gain. I managed 3d and 4th in the O40s years ago. So I'm tempted to try and have a crack at 49 with a view to a bigger assault on it at 50.
The current 050 champ Trevor Jacobs is untouchable. He is, I think 57 but still finishes top 5-10 most years. He has won an 050 world long course mtn title.
There is also a nice trail marathon in October and I will have hit 50 by then. Always talked about doing it but have never got around to it...

Thanks, driske, and you too rail trail runner. Confidence has taken a bit of a dip following last 2 workouts, but matter what happens on Sunday I'm very grateful for these last few years. Good luck with your running and have a happy holiday season.
I know an 57 year old who should hopefully be 2:40-2:50 range if not less at California International. I'm not sure what he's looking for, I just know he's FAST.....
Now that's an inspiration.

I'm sure I know them or know of them if they live in Northern Cal. Dennis Kurtis and Tom Bernhard are 2 who come to mind that I'm sure can break 2:50 if they have a decent day. Not sure if they will be at CIM, though. They are both in 55+ division.
He's not from Nor Cal....
Jim in SJ,
Good luck in your race! I think a lot of us will be looking forward to seeing your result.
