Here we go again... In (hopefully) a week and a half or so, I can start running again after my metatarsal stress fracture. It is my 3rd stress fracture. I ran my first few years of college, up to 80 mpw, but I've been running no more than 35-40 mpw this past year, all on grass/dirt, mostly easy or regular runs. I've concluded that it happened from doing a hill workout for the first time in a very long time. Like I said, I've been running primarily on flat ground and this hill was huge (steep 400 meters). Plus I'm prone to stress fractures due to low bone density. I'm taking calcium supplements and lifting weights again, so hopefully that will help.
Now I am trying to figure out what changes I need to make when I start running again. I believe in minimalism, but I'm sure some of you will blame that on causing the injury. I do not think that caused it. I was injured less after switching to flats. When I ran in trainers (mostly Mizuno Wave Rider for around 5 or 6 years), the heel was too high. I am a mid/forefoot striker. The high heel caused my first (tibial) stress fracture and chronic shin splints, stress reactions, etc. Everything felt stronger and more flexible when I switched to flats.
I thought less shoe was better, so I progressed to less shoe over an 18 month period and seemed to be doing well: Mizuno Wave Rider (not minimalist) -> Mizuno Idaten -> New Balance 205 -> Adidas adiZero RC -> New Balance RC152/Nike Zoom Streak XC -> Asics Pirahna.
However, because of this recent stress fracture in my foot, I wonder if I need a little more cushioning. I was thinking something like the Nike Free or Nike Lunar Racer. Any suggestions or experiences with these? I've had the Free 5.0, but just for walking around. Never ran much in them. Or should I go back to normal running shoes? Ideally I need a flexible-soled shoe with a low heel and I guess some cushioning.
