I guess I had no idea what I was getting into here. I'm a high school coach with a small but relatively successful distance program. 10 years into it I'm discovering the limits of the DRF and different HS modifications of the Lydiard approach.
I was first interested when I read Hudson's interview "Everything Matters" He mentioned Mr. Canova's approach and influence. I've also looked at a few excerpts from Hudson's new book which seem consistent with or derived from the training philosophy explained by Canova.
I went back and looked at the locked Canova LT thread and really discovered a gold mine.
I think I may now understand why many of my runners stagnate or flatten out when doing high volume and high intensity work as part of a predicatable, seemless, incremental progression. Year after year I have runners who look flat on the track midseason when they're on their 3rd or 4th week of 1000's at 5k pace when I'm expecting that they should be adapting and able to more easily manage this workout. I look at the numbers--the mileage, recent performances, etc and everything seems reasonable (according to the received wisdom) EXCEPT their performances.
Anyway, a timely and relevant discussion for me at this point in my coaching career. And I have the experience and backgroud to make sense of it now. If I looked at that locked thread my first year as a coach, It would have been meaningless to me.
I'm working with these ideas to develop an indoor program for our runners--we'll see how it goes.
