I didn't see a thread yet for this week so I thought I'd start off...
Goal NYC, 2:20
WEEK #21 of training: (90 miles total)
10-12-08:
AM: Easy 35min around the stadium and track area at Izumo. The Japanese teams were out doing some serious looking (ie very fast) strides on the track...but also jogging around at 12min pace. They will bring it tomorrow....lots of depth on these teams. Looking at past years results the first 8k leg (which I'm running) usually takes a sub 24min effort to even place in the top 15...should be a good race.
(5 miles for the day)
10-13-08:
RACE DAY!
PM: Ran 24:46 for the opening 8k leg...pretty bad race for me. Went out fast in 2:43 for the first 1000m and then died hard the last 7k. Still going sub 3min pace through 3k and then 15:00 for 5k. Last kilo around 3:20. The other guys dropped me like I was standing still (went out in 2:35 for lead pack). Pretty hot and humid, race started at 1:05pm. I didn't get to do any strides in "warming up" and perhaps all my marathon training has hurt my performance today.
(10.5 miles for the day)
10-14-08:
AM: Easy 52min streets of Izumo....I had a really bad headache.
(7 miles for the day)
10-15-08:
AM: Easy 73min streets of Tokyo...flew out of Narita and heading back to the states now....
(10 miles for the day)
10-16-08: (back in the USA)
PM: LONG 110min steady... midway clocked myself on the track at 5:56 pace then at 6:05 pace on the hilly plantations loop. After that rolled out onto timed run and split 5:51, 5:45 (uphill), 5:42 and 5:34 which wasn't really very hard at all considering I was traveling all night for 25 hours.
PM: Easy 51min...closed last 2 miles on the track in 10:08 though (5:12, 4:56)...started feeling "the wall" + Strides
(25 miles for the day)
10-17-08:
AM (6:00am) Easy 44min trails in the dark
PM: (9:00pm) Easy 50min roads in the dark...quads are in the hurtbox- but thats marathon training.
(13.75 miles for the day)
10-18-08:
AM: Easy 64min...some hefty guy was jogging at 10min pace. He heard me coming to pass him, looked up, and turned around backwards to apparently taunt me as he then took off and put the hammer down. I was going my usual 7min pace and with his surge he was still barely holding me off. Well after about 400m of that I put down 4:40 pace for awhile and smoked him. I'm not going to let someone pass me or hold me off on an easy day. Its against my mentality.
PM: Easy 68min streets in the dark.
(18.75 miles for the day)

Considering I flew half-way around the world, had a race, and had 2 single digit days this was a pretty good training week!
