What % of maximum heart rate is marathon race pace? I understand that it depends on the person etc. but a ball park figure please and thanks.

The Hadd guys say 88-90%, but this takes some serious training to get to.

Bump
88-90% is over lactate threshold-- how is that possible??
Anyone else have an answer? Also, does this change if you're at higher altitude?

Not if you train and move your threshold higher:
http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/0398.htmShould you use heart rate?
One increasingly popular solution to this problem is to rely on heart rate, not running pace, to reckon threshold intensity. It's worth noting that running at threshold intensity (which is about 80-88 per cent of current V02max) usually produces a heart rate of about 85-92 per cent of maximum.
85%-86% for well trained runner
less if you did not train too much...
From data I have seen from runners of different abilities, all of them in great shape, but widely differing paces, 88-90% of MHR is a common figure. Starting at the lower figure, and rising to the higher figure in the late stages of the race.
Yes it sounds high, but the same runners in a half marathon would be over 92% MHR
