This advice only applies to non-elites.

The tip is: Catch the flu and Lose Weight!

Last fall, I got terribly sick for 7 days and couldn't hardly eat. I lost 12 pounds, from 150 to 138! When I returned to running on day 8, you'd think I would have felt bad from being sick. Instead, I felt AWESOME. My 5k immediately dropped from over 16 minutes to 15:40. I swear I could feel the difference - lighter, easier to run, and faster. Muscle I had put on boxing the previous summer had been shed, and it helped.

So go on. Catch the flu from a coworker, your kids, wherever you can catch it.

why even bother getting sick... you might as well throw up after every meal. that might even be more beneficial.

Except I bet some of the 12 pounds was water. Once I started eating again, I bounced back up a little to 143. But I was still lighter than 150 and feelin' good!

you are correct about the losing weight part but come off as a nut with how to do it. If you have some fat to lose, dropping 10 lbs CAN make a huge difference. I dropped from 160 to 150 (6' tall) and improved my prs in everything.

While I don't suggest getting the flu or even going on some crazy crash diet, I agree that losing weight is a HUGE benefit in running. Dropping 10 pounds of lard will improve your running quicker than anything else.

can you imagine how well Henry Rono could race in his stalled out comeback if he could somehow lose 25 lbs of fat he's carrying around? He would be off the charts!
