starting over from scratch

    I ran for 4 years in high school. I was a decent runner w/ a 5k pr in the high 16s and a 440 mile.

    however my last track season i ran through an injury and finished the season but i have not been able to run for 3 months.

    I want to start running again though, but this time i wanna do it the right way. I dont have ne set race so i have as much time as i want to build up.

    So give me advice on the best way to start off.

    Should i start minimalist or barefoot?

    diet?

    cross training?

    tell me everything i need to start completely over

    and if you dont mind starting slowly, id suggest running barefoot.

    Yeah, you are real serious about being a runner!

    Get a coach or at least hang out with runners one percent smarter than yourself. Listen and learn.

    Assuming that you're serious...

    I was in the same boat and have to second the "start off slow" advice, and actually caution AGAINST too much cross-training.

    I ran cross country and track in high school, and then didn't run at all in college. After college I decided to start again, and thought it would be a great idea to spend 2 months biking and using the elliptical before I started running (building a base for building a base).

    This, in and of itself, is not a bad idea, but I went about it COMPLETELY the wrong way. I felt aerobically fit after the two months, but my legs (and shins especially) were not ready for all of the pounding. I jumped right into 30+ mile weeks with minimal build-up, and now have been hampered by shin splints for the past 5 months.

    Cross training is fine but remember that you have to build up your running slowly, regardless of how fit you feel from cross training.
