I was just wondering what fluids they give out in races such as London, Rome, Berlin and the Asian marathons. Is the water sparkling bottled stuff or just regular? What about sports drinks and gels, are they available?

In the elite races you are allowed to plant your own fluids every 5km, or you can go with water or whatever sports drink is on offer.
The problem in Berlin was that because I was not exactly super-elite going into the race, my bottles of VAAM were on a table with about 50 other bottles...I was NOT about to stop and search. Finally at 25km a nice race-volunteer just handed my bottle to me as I ran past. The rest of the time I was doing water.

At London, they have water every so often (I forget exactly) and Lucozade Sport every 5 miles. I'd never had Lucozade before London, but drank it during the race and it beats the hell out of Gatorade. I don't think you can get the stuff in the US. It comes in Capri-Sun like containers that you squeeze.
Years ago I used to pick up Lucozade at the drug store of all places, you might give that a try. Used to swear by the stuff.

There is a plain lucozade that is carbonated that is sold in a lot of US grocery stores in the specialty/international foods isle. I think the carbonated stuff sucks.
Lucozade Sport is non-carbonated, very sweet and sugary. I haven't been able to find it anywhere in the US. Even though I had never had it until London, I drank it during the race and was never bothered by it at all.
