Running miles for XC

Basically I realize that even though I am running only 3.1 miles for my XC race that is is beneficial to train by running well over that (I shoot for 6 miles 6x a week). BY the way i am a freshman in HS.

BUT, I can't exactly give a proper reason to my parents on why it is good to run the extra mileage as they seem to think that i should just run my race distance all the time. The only reason i can think of is that it will build me up more aerobically and help me greatly in the 800m come track season. What are some other reasons I can give them??

Hi Sam, I don't really no much about training methods but the reason why it is good to run more mileage than race distance is so that you can build up your aerobic endurance. This will help you in the latter part of your race. While the others are feeling the heavy legs and finishing slowly you will be able to dig deep and finish strong. Plus it will enable you to copy with hard workouts (eventually) it will help you improve as a runner. I hope this helps, keep up the good training.

Tell them no college runner ever got that good running 21.7 miles a week in hs and running <40 miles a week in college xc.For the 8 and 10, I am running 65 miles right now but if I hadn't been injured so badly I woul dbe around 75-85 this summer.

Are your parents trying to prevent you from running more or are they just asking questions you don't know the exact answer for? If they are trying to stop you from running more you have a problem. If they are just asking why then your answer of building yourself up more aerobically is probably a sufficient answer. My parents didn't understand it either, but didn't stop me from doing it. they just wanted to make sure I wasn't hurting myself, your parents are probably the same. You could also just say that you are doing what the coach wants you to do and he/she is the expert on running. Obviously, they aren't running experts so how can they really argue with what the coach wants you to do? You could probably even get your XC coach talk to your parents. He or she can (or at least should) be able to give them a good explanation of what running more mile will do for you.

You could try explaining that by running further than your race distance, it makes the 5k seem shorter and easier on race day.

Sorta true and easy to understand.
