I'm going to be a sophomore in college and i haven't run since the state finals of track. I'm 20ish pounds heavier than i was in hs (from 135 to 155). I've been trying to get back in shape... but i'm terrible. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to try and stay around the same weight.. but bulk up. I think i was way to skinny and weak in high school and that it hurt my performance. Thoughts? im about 5'11'' btw...
Oh yeah, and i used to be a really good biker... but the few times i've tried it's been terrible. I think the weight is a big factor in that... yeahh
I've always found that if I run fairly consistantly (5 days a week or so) for three weeks straight I can then begin to build up to where I used to be. The first three weeks are always the hardest and after that it's all downhill.
I actually have been doing the same thing. In May I started running again for the first time since November '06.
I can vouch for the first few weeks being the toughest. Also, lose the weight. I had to do that for sure. Once the weight starts coming off and you start getting consistent, it'll come back.
The biggest thing is just to stick with it. Its really hard, but "breakthroughs" will come fairly consistently.
okay thanks... So should i lift at all right now? Or should i lose the weight and then try to get stronger?
Up to you I guess. Did you lift before?
Not really... but i think my speed and my overall success was limited in high school due to my lack of strength.
I'd say just do what you're comfortable with. If you don't have any race goals in the near future, just take your time and experiment.
Every member of my family is doing a marathon in about 6 months.. it'd be cool of i could do it.. but id want to race, not just finish
5'11", 155 lbs is a fine weight. I'm 5'10" and I haven't been under 160 lbs since I reached this height at age 16. I've still run some decent times - sub-2 800, sub-16 5k.
Just put in the work.
