As a traditionalist I have favored static stretching for distance runners. Warm up a few miles, stretch, then run.
I have noticed some teams switching to an active stretching routine, and taking out the warm up run. The routine includes active drills (lunges, side steps, etc, etc).
Any thoughts on this?
In my opinion, this type of warm up seems better suited for sprinters, and other sports requiring more explosive movements.
When my runners did this in track, they seemed to run less (they gave up their mile to two mile warm up), and they seemed to get little tweaky injuries, unlike when they do static.
