Does anyone know what the 10k course is like? Where you can find a map of the 10k or even the 5 mile course? Should you wear spikes or road flats on the course?

The five mile (8k. really) course starts at the top of the flats, where the 5k course starts, and follows the 5k loop (through the backhills and down along broadway through the finish line). Then it circles the flats again and slightly more than halfway back to freshman hill, takes a sharp left turn, doubling back on a rising path toward cemetery hill. After heading back for about 200 yards or so, you take a sharp right, go up cemetery hill, and then descend down to the bridge, where you hang left and finish along broadway.
You might stop up for one of the college races one weekend and just check out what they do.
As for the 10k course, I have no idea. I've never been aware of a 10k race there.
You can find a map of the 5k course on a link at

I would definitely wear spikes at VCP.
they change the course all the time, both the 8km and the 10km. They run the 10km course every other year at the NE regional meet. when i ran it the course was simply the five km course twice.
i've run with and without spikes and done fine, it's just a matter of preference on that course (and conditions/weather).
good luck
There is a map and write up on the Iona webpage. The map is horrible, but if you scroll down past the women's 6k map, it gives a write up about the course. If you are familar with Vanny, it you'll know exactly what they are talking about.
The 10k is either the 5km (no cemetary hill) twice or once the standard 5km and once 5km with cemetary hill.
Recently they've been running 5km twice without cemetary.
the 2x5k course is what the 10k is these days at van cortland. the flats and hills are pretty much all the same surface, similar to a cinder track. a dry day keeps the ground very hard so long spikes are surely not needed. the old 10k course used to run the 8k course, up cemetary, and then go straight across the bridge into the back hills for the extra 2k. some said it was long, but either way it was brutal, with pat porter being the only guy running 30:00.
