I've had the opportunity to talk to Coach Li and Dave Murray on multiple occassions. They both have always said Lagat does 65 miles a week or so.
Probably doesn't count the 5 mile morning run because its relatively slow and easy (not real running). The real story won't come out until he retires.
Remember the stories all said Coe only did 50-60 miles per week. Then once comfortably into retirement he admitted to doing 100+ a week some of the time.
Sounds right to me. Why should a world class miler be doing much more than that. They need to be working the extra time on making themselves better athletes (plyos, drills and such).
he's pretty good at 5k too.
"He trains six days a week, alternating short workouts with long, and easy with hard.
What's hard for Lagat?
"Running at an average of 4:59, 4:58, a little under five minutes per mile for four miles straight," he says.
Followed by an easy five-mile run in the afternoon.
What's easy? Six-minute miles.
On Saturdays he runs a half-marathon on roads in the foothills above Tucson. It can be a grind ... until he comes home. "

I was going to post the NPR thing too. I guess he does? What's up with that?

Maybe they were only referring to a certain phase of his training.
Remember- Quality not Quantity! If he's just maintaining high fitness level and putting in hard workouts with psychological mental power then thats all he has to do!

Lagat hopes to win gold in Beijing. Four years ago in Athens, he lost by .12 seconds in the 1,500 meters to the sentimental favorite, Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj. Lagat says he still thinks about that race, but he deeply respects his opponent.
"He had to dig really deep," Lagat says. "You know, he got something from his heart. I told him, 'You will win it, El Guerrouj. Just give it one more shot."
Did he really tell El G he would win the Olympics 1500? When did he tell him this? Before the final? Right after 2000?
He's really a modern sprinter/mid-distance... he needs speed with some endurance, not endurance with some speed, he got a great base from before he turned 25... speed kills
this is old news. He has always professed that he ran low mileage once a day. he needs no more than that.
smash and grab from the rental car, ya Oregon sounds like a great place to visit, although hopefully most people will learn not to leave there wallet and cell phone in the car and visible to someone outside, lock your valuables in the trunk or better yet leave them in the hotel or house

Of course he doesn't. His running is 98% anaerobic because he's pretty much a sprinter.
