Here's the deal. I ran xc fairly well in HS. Nothing special, 16:45-17:45 for 5k. I took a few years off, gained a few pounds, and have recently started running again. I've been running consistently for 8-9 weeks now. Today it was 45 deg. with a 25-40 mph wind, so I decided to run on the treadmill. I ran 4 miles in 22:45 with a 6:25 first mile. I left the incline on 1.5% for most of the run, with a few steeper hills mixed in. I ran the last 3 miles in something around 16:40. I feel like I'm in good shape, but not that good. My question is this, is a treadmill run as effective as a real run, and is the pace realistic?
